Is that not why you have a chief scout. It's not like PJ has to go himself unless he doesn't trust the word of said chief scout. First your scouts find someone they really think is good then you might consider going to have a look yourself. Problem solved.
it takes me 2hrs to drive home from portman rd to gt. yarmouth ,i feel sure the road gets longer each time .
Thats why the club needs to employ good scouts Hampy who's job will be to travel to these places and find the talent , who cares how far away it is . If our away supporters can do it , and pay for the privellage then so can the scouts who are paid to do it . coyb
Goodness me he's said that any weekend we cover about 20 games but every football manager takes in games as well. It wouldve been a piece of piss from Derby and Wigan and a lot harder from Suffolk, so what's the problem?!
If your team is successful you will attract the players. We didn't have a problem in the late 70s/80s did we. I mean, come on, who really wants to live in Manchester or Liverpool, I mean, really, think about it. It's only because of the team, it's not because of the city, is it?
Why doesn't PJ go to Holland and Belgium its a darn sight closer than up north! I'm pretty sure he's been to Amsterdam a fair few times!
Not having a go at Jewell in particular but has anyone else noticed that Suffolk has only ever been a locational problem in the ME era? I know other managers have mentioned it but it has never really held us back in the past has it? We used to recruit half our team from Scotland, which still produces a lot of cheap talent but cant recall the last player we signed from north of the border. On Jewells comment, he may not be able to see as many players as he would like personally but surely if we have a scouting network of 20 they must be spread out throughout the country and possibly further afield aswell. I know we used to have dedicated regional scouts and even employed a European scout. I take it the distances he used to travel were 10 time greater than any trip around the UK.
You can fly from Norwich airport to Manchester I believe, although admittedly that would be a costly away day, nice though.
In Bobby Robson's time there was Ipswich airport which closed maybe 15 years ago or so just to throw that factor into the mix...
