Best years under Reidy, I think people have forgotten all the great times we had under him, yes it was sour at the end but there is not many reigns that don't go the same way. Poyet plays nice football and I look forward to a full season under him but he needs to go a long way to catch up to Reidy at the moment.
To look at it another way , those 7th places won us nothing and Reid took us down once and very nearly a 2nd time. He brought in absolutely dreadful players that wasted millions and set us up for relegation before he was rightly sacked. Mick McCarthy came in as the fall guy and is poorly regarded as a result. Reid seems to have gained a reputation, with Sunderland supporters, that's probably better than he deserves in my opinion. Having said that he did bring some exhilarating football to the SOL.
He gets all the respect he deserves from me but won nothing, took us down and brought in loads of totally **** players. He was seriously backed whereas Poyet had to perform a miracle with what was shoved on him. We've no idea how good Scocco or Bridcutt are but I know Marcus Stewart & Sean Thornton were hopeless.
I didn't say they had but Reid had 8 years and didn't come close ....... Poyet did in 8 months. If we'd held the lead against Man City there would be no question in my mind or many others.
Yes but unfortunately for us safc fans "ifs" don't win you football games or trophies. And unfortunately coming close doesn't win you anything in football. Avram grant for Chelsea came close to winning the champions league, carling cup and league title, he was a hairs breath away from a famous treble, he failed on all 3 and was sacked.. He didnt win, and that's all that matters in football.
If any Sunderland manager actually won anything it would be beyond success. If one did you would not be comparing them with Reid but with Bob Stokoe... Look who won the manager of the year last season - and he won bugger all, mind Pulis is being talked about as the next England manager.
Blows Reidy out of the park on tactical knowledge and on training techniques and on player management. Yeah, Gus is better.
Surely they can only be judged on success though bri mate. Di canio had good training methods apparently, but look at his tenure.
Yeah but Di canio sucked at player management and tactics. Success doesn't define a managers capabilities imo, Roberto Di Matteo won the champions league, yet he hasn't walked into a top job. If managers were chosen on success surely he'd have been given an offer he couldn't refuse. Reid was known for making all his training sessions 11 v 11 kickaround, he cut short many a promising Sunderland career with his stubborn no **** one chance attitude and was tactically shown up once Quinny hung up his boots. Poyet plays the game how I prefer to see it played, He got Connor scoring when his attitude was all wrong, same with Bardo, and prefers strenuous pre seasons how I'd personally like to see us do, I believe last seasons PDC fitness plan led to very few injuries after suffering for a decade with crocks. I've thought through my opinion but didn't base any of it on success. It's just not what I look for fella.
I didn't say it did. If 'all that matters in football' is winning things then Reid is no better than Poyet to use your logic. In fact Poyet must be better because he didn't relegate the club. You were demanding I gave Reid credit & respect ........ for what if nothing matters except winning?
Too early to tell yet but Reid turned out to be a manager who could not plan ahead. Summerbee and Johnson were the perfect providers for Quinn and Phillips but he had difficulty in judging replacement players in the long term. Moreover he was not one to listen to others opinions and advice, a good team builder of workaday players into a strong unit but there he stayed.
