Is playing Boro a Derby?

Its more than just a normal game for us so i'd say it is a derby but it's not a strong and empassioned one really. The only time i was really that bothered was when we were both in the championship and it seemed like they may be vying with us at the top. It is bloody miles away though, can you imagine trying to convince a London team that every match they play against teams within an hours drive is a derby.

 

The phrasing of your words, if I went by nothing else, says to me that it's the very definition of a derby.

The overall definition is the passion(/implied hatred), however. Boro are more of a cartoonish neanderthal who bashes himself on the head, than the Mackem like chucklebrothers...

 

The way I see it, a Derby has to be within the same county or very close to the club's city

Newcastle's derbies would be Sunderland, Gateshead, Blyth, Newcastle Benfield and any other south northumberland teams

Sunderland's derbies would be Newcastle, Hartlepool, Gateshead, Darlo, Chester Le Street, Durham etc

Boro's derbies would be Leeds, Hull, York etc

 

Despite the fact that Sunderland is closer to Boro than it is to Darlo? Never mind the fact that Boro is closer to Newcastle than it is to Leeds, Hull and probably about equidistant to York?

I get the impression a lot of folk think its a lot further away than it actually is...

 

Sunderland - Boro = 25 miles
Newcastle - Boro = 33 Miles
Hull - Boro = 61 miles
Leeds to Boro = 50 miles
York - Boro = 41 miles

According to the net anyway.

Howay man, let's not let a small matter like the facts come into a discussion like this

 

Whether people feel if it's a derby or not is up to to the individual...I do regard it as very much our second derby, although I have used the 'I don't give a monkeys' weapon against their fans in banter in the past and will probably do so again in the future..

i never have considered them a derby. We have one derby, Newcastle, thats it. I hate it when pundits and debates are convinced their's a extreme rivalry between every team, but its just not true. Of course you want to win every game, but theirs always that one team which you might hate just a little (or alot) more than others, or you particually want to win against every time you played them.

obviously i want to beat boro, but its not a derby for me
