Agreed. Plus also the fact that Lovenkrands is past it. Doesn't have that pace and theart he had when he was at Rangers back in his ''peak/prime'' days, even then he wasn't a world-beater. <ok>

Awful substitutions. We all know Shola would have came on if he was on the bench. Its just Pardews way. Hopefully he will learn from it before we end up losing too many points because of it.

    Are you smoking crack?

We're 2 nil up and cruising against a bruising team fighting hard to come back, Ba took a knock and Pardew decides to shake things up. Who else would he put on? Lover deserved a game and Guthrie is def more defensively minded than Marveaux or Ben arfa.

We slacked off, specially Colo and Taylor, hardly Pardews fault. Did you want Shola out there? Or Santon for a league debut? Hold on Elliot was on the bench, we should have put him on. Gee

If Gosling had been on the bench I suppose he would have been the sub but he wasn't so there. Maybe Smudger ought to be on the bench to come on and dick things up.

I can sort of understand them, Lover is fully fit and always gives 100% and guthrie is more defensively sound than ben arfa or marveux

The thing that annoyed me the most concerning the substitutions was how long it took Pardew to realise we needed to change something after getting wailed on for the entire second half.

This, apart from Ameobi would have started if fit, I still can't get my head round the fact he gets a game at all!

this is perhaps one of the most ridiculous threads I've come across in some time.

are you serious? 'inept' means in footballing terms something like 'not the faintest idea', no manager in the WORLD could manage a football team at this level being tactically 'inept' - stupid thread. is he however one of the less tactically aware managers in this league? debatable. i'd say he's a fantastic manager who has very much proved that with his decision making, management of the players and (dare i say it on a thread of this calibre) tactical decisions before and during matches.

'tactically inept' is a sickening tag to place upon someone in the peak of their managerial career. worst than a journalist to be honest.

So you didn't get the gist that this thread was mainly about his substitutions????<confused>

Thanks for clearing that up, I didn't know what inept meant. I just heard it somewhere and thought ' I'm gonna use that in a thread' Cretin. If you bothered to read the other posts (assuming you can read) you will see that I said I was being abit harsh. As for the sickening tag, golly gosh you are easily offended. Im sure if we had of lost yesterday you wouldn't be on here saying he is a 'fantastic' manager.

So risk throwing three points away because someone deserves a game. <doh>

I understand trying to keep squad morale high, but Wolves were coming at us relentlessly, not the time for a sentimental substitution. Lovenkrands predictably had no impact on the game, and we were clearly less threatening after the change.

Then why not bring him on for Ba or Best and pack the midfield? At that period of the game it was vital we kept possession, and therefore kept Cabaye and Tiote in the centre of the park. So he takes Cabaye off and throws on Guthrie, who like Lovenkrands, was a passenger for the rest of the game.

Again, another sentimental change: "Oh lets give Danny a run out, he's hardly kicked a ball all season". Against Blackburn where we were in control, fair enough. But we were really under the cosh yesterday and his subs made things worse and almost cost us three points.

Why gutherie over gosling though??? That's my only gripe really. Not giving gosling a spot on the bench to get gutherie a spot mystifies me like.

Crazy. We're sitting in 3rd, the guy has clearly sorted out our defense which is, on paper, technically worse than it was last season and has us playing good football in general. Granted I wasnt able to see the match yesterday but from all we've seen this season he is most definitely not tactically inept. He makes mistakes here and there and he really needs somebody to tell him how substitutions are supposed to work, but he is far from inept.

If he didn't have a 'footballing brain' as you so put it, we wouldn't be where we are now. Fair enough his subs yesterday were pretty bad and could have cost us but there was surely more method to his madness, nevertheless we still won the game.

Sure we rode our luck in the second half but I wouldn't say we were 'lucky' to win. We put in a fantastic performance first half but were poor in the second. Ba could have and should have made it 3-0 when he put it round the post. Most of Wolves' shots yesterday were either miles wide or row Z. Krul made some fantastic saves and kept us in it but it wasn't because of luck, that's what he's there to do!

As for the equaliser incident, I haven't really seen their disallowed goal again- only on the live (albeit, relatively poor) stream but even then it seemed 50/50 and it seems to be on of these 'was it/wasn't it?' kind of incidents which happen every week in football (and won't be resolved until video technology is brought in- but I digress) and it will probably be that we have a perfectly good goal disallowed next week, it's just the way the game is.

    Onwards and Upwards!

Also, if you think Wolves squandered opportunities, you should have seen Norwich- they could have easily won at Old Trafford yesterday!

I have always thought Pardew was a good manager, (hated what happened to hughton but that wasnt owt to do with Pardew), but Iam beginging to suspect he is better than good..and might be very good...and he certainly isnt inept. Yes he got it wrong with hindsight. We were 2-0 up and had dominated the 1st half, first 20 odd mins of the 2nd wolves pressurre mounting, but the majority of their shots are long range etc. Lover had almost been promised an appearence (Pards said after last week he shoudl have been on instead of Ben Arfa due to notts performance)..this is great man managmment ie I noticed when you played well and will reward that ASAP..keep it up)

So Ba / Lover .. not an unreasonable sub ..freshen things up ..particulalry as we were sitting deeper and deeper..and we only realy threatnening on break aways.

Cabaye / Guthrie .. Cab possible tired / Guthrie can be solid and is more a defensive midfielder than BA or Marv.

Obertan trying flicks etc and giving the ball away lots.. this put us under a lot of pressure , But the positive aspect of that ..is his confidence is coming back, and when those flicks etc start connecting sexy football might just be on the cards.

Its a squad game ..no use relying on just 12-13 players ..we will need to use everyone at somepoint.. So get them pitch time when you can..

Granted the pressure kept mounting ...but the defense kept making cracking saves, (including Simmo and Raylor), their bodies were always being put on the line (one particular save Krul makes, Saylor is throwing himself to block it behind him (if missed) ..Its been a long time since I can remeber a Toon defence this visibly passionate about NOT conceding a goal. they almost ooze determination. (long may it last)

Similar thing/debate happened at QPR and next time ..lessons learned and changes were made. I have no problem with that, that isnt the sign of an inept manager , but of a manager that learns, adapts, and is acting 'globally' with respect to all aspects of being a manager ..training, man manger, tactics, subs etc etc

Also, ...Its the Toon ..If there wasnt the occasional (normally lots dont forget) paniced last 10 mins, grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory, Shola standing there looking clueless while other players try to use him to deflect a shot into the goal, Sudden rushes of blood to the head where the entire back 4 decide they want to be strikers simultaneously or whatever, we have all sat there shaking our heads in disbelief at times.. Its the Toon and I for one wouldnt have it any other way, even if it does age me prematurley.

Long post.. just up, drinkign first cofee ..sun is out ..and 3 points ..a lucky 3 pts , we were lucky but you do make your own luck. 7 games, 15 pts, 4!! goals conceded, that isnt just luck

Lovenkrands was our only recognised striker on the bench. Putting on Ben Arfa would have been an acknowledgement of sitting back; at least Pardew tried to stick to the 4-4-2.
It didn't work, but you can't blame him for trying.
Guthrie came on partly to time-waste and partly just as some fresh legs in the middle of the park.

Much tougher challenge coming up now, let's see what else we've got in store.

This thread is about his substitutions (or being tactically inept as you say) not whether i'd be supporting him if we had or had not won.

You mention being harsh, well you only wrote 4 lines & a title! can you not write 4 lines & a title without being totally ruthless & incorrect with your wording next time?

Yes i agree the gist of your thread is about his substitutions, then why title the thread as 'tactically inept'? Substitutions during a game are just a small element in judging a managers tactical ability & knowledge.

Your title implies that he doesn't have a clue tactically in every aspect as a footballing manager, you gave him an unjustifiable tag. simple.

Let me give you an analogy here, it's like a chef using a special ingredient for a dish you eat, you disliking this dish and then start telling everyone he's totally inept at his job.

Oh also, 'golly gosh you are easily offended' & 'assuming you can read', why act like a child about this? i'm just pointing out that this thread is showing great unjust towards a manager that has gotten us our best start for 17 years. no need to weep kid.

Try again Numbnuts. If you read the title '' Is Pardew tactically inept?'' you will in fact see it is a question and not a statement. And yes I did question his 'footballing brain' as the subs he made were baffling to say the least and put us under more unnecessary pressure.
You mentioned that the thread was about subs rather than whether you would be supporting him had we not won. So, if we had conceded and scraped a draw or maybe worse lost, who would you have blamed? The most probable answer is Pardew for bringing on the wrong subs and playing the wrong formation (tactics).

Now let me give you an analogy. Say the chef is making a very special Ham sandwich , but instead of using the prime selected cuts of gammon (he has available to him)
he uses SPAM instead. I would be telling everyone he's not good at his job. (although I do like spam)

And for the record, I'm Overjoyed to the start of the season we've had. I do, however, feel entitled after 25 years of support and suffering to vent my opinion even if it doesn't conform to the majority on here.
