Tottenham.......because my brother was an Arsenal fan and I wanted to piss him off Because my Nan and grandad lived opposite Highbury before they moved to Stevenage and I didn’t want to be “another” Arsenal fan. And an soft spot for Norwich.......not sure why, only similar size to Saints
I always look for Falkirk's results. Went up there for my mate's wedding in 1986 and he insisted on proudly taking me to their old ground, it made the Dell look sensational. He died a few years ago but I'll always remember his beaming face while explaining that the 7000 Falkirk fans made more noise than any team in Scottish football. Shame they're a bit crap now.
Liverpool because of Kenny Dalglish as a kid growing up in the early eighties. Arbroath are my Scottish as we went to game there once on holiday, again as a kid. But lately I have been watching a lot of Havant and Waterlooville as that is my home town team, conference football is so much more fun to watch than the premiership.
Weymouth, their leading scorer’s name is Brandon Goodship Yeovil Town Women, Premiership football for £3 !!!
I went to a lower league match yesterday as a minor Boxing Day tradition (and Saints weren't playing). First time I've seen someone in the crowd wearing an EU-flag hat. I think I might have moved to a slightly more metropolitan area.
I'm an RCD Mallorca season ticket holder, I go to every home game and get to two or three away games a season ( it's difficult when you live on an island ). I sometimes have game clashes and always choose Saints as I would in the highly unlikely event of us actually ever playing each other. As for other English teams, nah. I'm Southampton through and through. The same here in Spain. " ni Barca, ni Madrid, ¡Somos de Mallorca! "
Growing up United was actually my second team. Reason being that the main football influence in my early youth was my late grandfather, who from up north, was a united fan and was the person who got me interested in football in the first place. But i grew up in Southampton and all my mates were Southampton fans. The first game i was taken to was a Southampton reserve game and it just naturally became my team. I'm in my mid twenties so our fall from the premier league was during my teenage years but even then i found that more interesting that united winning everything and i still got more into Southampton. I wore a black united shirt to my grandfather's funeral when i was a kid and that was the last time i wore anything united related. i didn't hold any ill will to united while we weren't in the same league and would favour them over the other big teams until we got back into the premier league. nowadays though, especially with the appointment of Mourinho and Van gaal, neither of which i could stand. They're second to Liverpool as my most disliked. It's weird but i still want to like them due to that connection but its very hard to find a reason these days, and too easy to find reasons to hate them.
I used to favour ManU over the other `big clubs` when Fergie left Aberdeen to go there. I have no affinity for thm any longer however.
Eastleigh, l used go with my late father to home games when not conflicting with Saints home fixtures. I did this for 3-4 years, dating back from 2008, before l moved overseas. He played for them in his youth and became a dedicated supporter for over 15 years until the last couple of years his health deteriorated so he could not go. He passed away this June, he was cremated with his Eastleigh scalf.
Brighton. I once said that if Rupert Lowe ever came back, I would support Brighton. And he did come back ..... but I found it impossible to stop supporting Saints.
When Saints nearly went out of business, I realised that without them I would have no interest in the game I'd followed for decades. Second team? Give over. There are teams I don't dislike, but that hardly counts!
Saw more half and half scarves being sold today than I have seen before, so City are the favoured second team not united
