Wes Brown has won more European Cup's and League Titles then Ronaldo. Does that make Brown better then Ronaldo? Individual trophies are popularity contest. Suarez was the best player in the Premier League last year, but didn't win POTY because he acted like a twat.
For me it was Maradona.Won the World Cup and scudetto almost by willpower.Problem is it was like watching Ben Johnson or Flo Jo.We will never know whether the cheating Argie bistard was out there "on his own". As to Stanley Matthews I woud suggest you look at Ronaldinho video and his.To be brutally frank there is little comparison.I do realise there is a lot more tv footage to select from for modern players but the Brazilian was like a circus act at his peak.He did become nothing special very quickly though. C Ronaldo is like Keegan .Deserves incredible admiration to improve by work and determination on a fantastic ability level BUT Best and Messi were both born brilliant. Best and Ronaldinho did not last at the top for a full career and that really has to be part of the greatest ever package. In summary only one stand out player.Mr Wagstaff-voted greatest ever player by Mansfield and us-beat that Pele!
It was in response to Maradona drug taking comment. So i responded. The point im trying to make is that again there is much conjecture over this topic and the drugs topic, imo drugs in sport are rife.
Not got time to read all this but Messis is nowhere near being near the greatest of all time, in recent times Zidane and Ronaldo are both better all round players for starters, Ibrahimovic is more talented too in my opinion. Messi is a brilliant goalscorer for sure but that doesn't equate to being the best player.
Nice to see people backing George Best, pretty vile comment I noticed about his personal problems , what has that got to do with his football ability- one of the problems with this forum people just writing horrible abusive ****e for no reason
Well then, if we are picking it on all-round players, my suggestion of Beckenbauer trumps all. Only just noticed this - you're mental. Maldini is the best since Beckenbauer, and is my personal fave defender, but he was not better than Franz.
I think Ronaldo is definitely the better player. here are some of my arguments... I think he carries POrtugal on his shoulder. Where as Messi can rely on Aguero, Lavezzi, Higuain to help out. I think the fact Ronaldo has been ultra successful in two different leagues (he wasn't bad at Sporting either) gives him extra points and Finally I feel as though Barcelona has tailored themselves for Messi in such a way that scoring for fun is made easy. When you have pass masters like Xavi, Fabregas and Iniesta to put you through it makes your job far easier. Messi can definitely score goals on his own but I feel as though Ronaldo has to do more by himself to score those goals, he has to work harder than messi. From a skill perspective, they are quite different from each other so I don't think it comes into play. Messi is the better dribbler and close range finisher but Ronaldo is better at long shots, better heading and is stronger. I know people will laugh at some of this but I would rather have ROnaldo at city because at times where we are struggling he could create things for himself (win a freekick/penalty and take it himself or get past a few a shoot from range). I don't think Messi would be that good for us because our creativity and passing accuracy is ****. If you take away scoring goals for a minute though, and focused on an all round player then I think the best player was Zidane. He was on a different level of class altogether. Everything he did oozed class, almost like time slowed down for him and he could see everything around him. He made everything look so easy. SKills wise the best player for me is Ronaldhino. Best English player for me is Scholes.
Just do not see anyone capable of scoring the goals at the highest level compared with Maradona. Some of his goals against world class opponents.I think his free kick goal (I think against Juventus) shows he was not just a dribbling phenomenon. The Scots also think his "header" against England was the greatest goal at a world cup
George Best - genius. There is no doubt in my mind....most brilliant footballer I have ever seen, & I've seen a few over the last 60 years. Messi is fantastic...but pales by comparison. I doubt anyone who played with him, or against him, would dispute that, nor would many of the current generation of players, coaches or managers. Even Pele & Maradona admired him....and they were playing in different eras. Players are the best judges of their peers...everyone loved him for his brilliance....especially if he made them look like ordinary players, however good they were themselves.......so there !!!! PS. Waggy was bloody good too, similar attributes, but not quite at the same level.
