Anonymity was granted to rape defendants under the 1976 Sexual Offences Act, but was removed in 1988. Why are the defendants named (This would possibly include this one) Its an easy one in my opinion to answer,some people would say that no matter how much stress and trauma innocent defendants may be put through, those accused of rape must be named to encourage other potential victims to speak out. Anonymity for defendants in sex offence cases is potentially âunworkableâ,with social media sites, often people are outed or are threatened with being identified by an anonymous to try and force the police to act. I read some frightening stats avaliable confirm that around one in 20 women are raped or subjected to serious sex attacks by the time they are 60, But at least four in five rapes are not even reported to the police, and less than one in six of those which are lead to a conviction.(Source the Office for National Statistics DT).
