Isn't that a misunderstanding of the word ever..? Davis has been perfectly good enough - until the step up to the PL, this season. He has been decidedly shakier since, and that is despite saving two penalties - so he's still an excellent shot stopper. There may be several reasons for his drop in overall form, but the obvious answer was to take him out of the firing line. Gazzaniga could be the type of goalkeeper who is so young and confident, he can have a howler and come bouncing back for more. As far as I know he did nothing wrong today, but I shall find out in detail shortly.
Well, having looked at the goals again, if you were being unkind you could argue he was at fault for all of them. Went down too quickly for the first one (not that he probably would have saved it had he stood up anyway but he made it easy for Osman), poor positioning for the second and you could argue poor positioning for the third, although it would have been difficult to save anyway. I'm not writing the guy off, far from it, I'm sure he's got a bright future, but there's no way you can say he's our new number one based on that evidence.
Oh come on PTF, you know how people like to dive in with a little hype. Reeves will be the next George Best after his 10 minutes yesterday too!
Good grief! Blaming Gazza for anything yesterday would be totally unreasonable. Richardson would be in my sights as responsible for the two Tara goals - what is it with our full backs?
Positioning is something that improves with experience, though I do feel having seen the goals three times now that his positioning wasn't that bad. For the goal in the top corner I don't think he can be held responsible. The second was more down to the defence as the ball rebounded to open space and the scorer reacted first. The third is one that very few keepers would have saved as he had moved correctly to cover his near post and the shot was perfectly sent across him. If Rickie had scored it we would all have been saying how brilliant the goal was.
I thought Gazza actually had a very good game. He made some excellent saves and his distribution is far far better than Kelvin's
Originally i think kelvin davis was going to be considered the number one and his extra role was to help Gazzinga develop so that Gazzinga could break into the first team at a later date when davis would consider retirement. However, due to Davis's suspect performances (which i do not blame him entirely as i do think our dfence havent helped) I believe Nigel Adkins has brought Gazzinga into the side earlier to see whether this would solve the goalkeeping situation.
