I have a major issue with guaranteeing anyone games personally. He is certainly not better than Gyan so why would we drop Gyan for Defoe? 4 goals last season says it all for me
Its not quite as simple as saying we have a wage cap of £50k or £60k a week. The new fair play rules coming in over the next year or so state that you cannot spend more than you are earning as a club. In the past clubs with wealthy benefactors (and I dont believe Short is in it just for a bit of fun - he will expect a return) have been able to personally fun these kinds of big name signings on large wages. Ultimately unless we as a club arent making money, we cannot shell out on huge wage bills. This will depend on various commercial ventures (hence the changes at boardroom level) and selling more tickets on a match day. Quinn has said before finance is not a problem if we fill the SOL week in week out, and I suppose you could say buying these players will fill it, but big names certainly dont guarantee success.
Gyan is on 65k+ a week and I got that from a close relative who is high up in an organisation who have to give the okay for large and regular financial transactions. Bent was on similar, which is why I wondered why we'd baulk at 60k a week for the Zog. I think SNQ is trying to run a a tight ship, but I'm sure if the right player, with the right attitude for us came along we'd sign him. But regardless of the wages and his talent, he'd have to be the right fit as a man. Not sure if Defoe would be that lad to give his all for us.
