A valuable three points but hardly "sound". We allowed mediocre opponents low on confidence more shots on and off target than any other team in the division. I appreciate that is only a rough guide as hopeful punts from distance equally count as "shots" but I think had we been playing attacks as good as Forest, Derby, Palace, (or Blackburn or Blackpool to come) we might have conceded one or two more. Up front we were more dangerous, but then we expected that to happen once Fuller got fit enough to play most of the game, and now we have lost Kermorgant it is three steps forward and two back. Worrying times ahead with our shaky midfield and Kermit and Wiggins out. I would be interested to know from those who attended what they thought of Wilson, because he needs to do pretty well to be worth playing Solly on the wrong flank.
Judging by Blackburn's performance last night we might be coming up against them at the right time too.
A win is a win, it may have been nervy but it gets us out of the losing mindset. Plus it shows we can hold on to a lead. Look forward to hearing from people who went later.
Eddie, sound is a word I use to mean good. From the radio, sounded like Scotland especially thought Elliot was in goal, lots of long range shots. The win itself is good for me. After the last 3 matches, a win is enough for me. Deal with Blackburn when they come dahn our grahnd.
From the CAFCplayer commentary it sounded a bit like a reversal of our recent games. we were the better team for most of the match but let Ipswich back into it and were hanging on at the end but took the 3 points.
So pleased with this result and the changes that CP made are what I had discussed he should do before the Derby loss on Tuesday. Did not get to listen to the game but I shall be watching the FLS tonight. Long season ahead but all positive as I got to listen to the comments regarding the game from the BBC commentator.
Hanging on because the front two were too tired to latch onto clearances or (in BWP's case) to retain the ball. BWP usually gets subbed with 15 mins to go. Not this time, perhaps because Haynes needs more match-time before CP will use him with confidence and Cook was not available. Good that Fuller was fit enough to play 88 minutes but bad that he needed to do so because of lack of other options. No doubt Jewell is telling his team he was pleased with the last period and that gives them "something to build on for the next match". Where have I heard those words before?
Also puts into perspective our own performance against them. Good, but not as good as we thought. The table just shows how vital today's result was. Had we lost we would have been adrift with Posh. It's going to be a tightrope this year. I actually fancy us against Blackburn having watched them get mullered by Boro last night. Funny old game.
Mirrors what The Good Doctor said a couple of weeks ago about there not being a *** paper between all the sides in this division - not sure that I agree with him, the deciding factor may be the eye-watering amounts of money some clubs in this division have, but at the moment he's dead right.
Heard James scowcroft on BBC London post match and he was co commentating on the game and said we were excellent and played quality football and that 2 1 flattered Ipswich.... Sounds good to me
Have a killer hangover, but it was worth it. Nice to have the winning feeling back - also as it was very much a deserved win. The pleasing aspect was that the midfield was more balanced, though not the finished article by any means. I thought Fuller and BWP looked a much better bet upfront, but again I'm sure most fans will still be wondering how Kermo/Fuller would work. We looked to play the ball on the ground a lot more with Ricardo up top, but that could also do with the fact that our midfield wasn't constantly 10-20 yards behind the half way line. Wilson and Solly were good in assisting Green and Kerkar (who played well, nothing spectacular, but did improve the first 11). Green is full of confidence, every time he received the ball he got his head up and looked at his attacking options. He lost the ball a few times, but thats what happens with wingers who look to drive at the opposition. Hopefully the fans don't get on his back when he is tackled - obviously we don't like losing possession but he has looked like a Championship midfielder and he needs to be encouraged. Cort and Morrison solid as ever. The Mr consistent's of the team. Hamer was also safe in his handling. Wasn't actually worked too much in terms of quality shots - a lot of long range efforts and Ipswich squandered any decent chances that fell their way. JJ worked better in the middle, but the problem (for me anyway) is that he played the role of the attacking duo out of him and Stephens. The latter is still sitting a bit too deep for my liking, though he did have a couple of opportunities to get forward. You would think we want Stephens further up the pitch for 2 reasons: One, with his vision and passing style (forward rather than sideways or backwards) there will be times when it doesn't come off - you would surely want that as high up the pitch and away from the defence as possible? Two, with that passing style, you would rather the attackers be on the end of the ball than your midfielders. Just two thoughts I had watching yesterdays game.
Glad to hear that the midfield has improved. Dropping Hollands was a tough decision, one of him or Stephens had to go and the bench looks much stronger with Hollands there. Maybe a tad surprising that The Doctor brought on Dervite instead of Hollands to close out the game for the last few minutes. And I'm not sure that I want to see Solly at LB for 10 weeks or so. I'm also expecting another round of "You're getting sacked in the morning" against Blackburn.
i thought stephens had a bad game yesterday. there were a few times when he was ball watching and let play pass him by. jacko looked much better in the middle. kerkar looked good on the left too, he was always able to keep the ball, and thats what we need - to retain possession.
Thought Stephens and JJ linked well- but just not sure about Dale being more of the anchor. JJ is better in the box so there is the logic.
I've been to 5 league matches this season. Missed Leicester and Ipswich. I'm not going to the Blackburn match
