VPN - I've been using airvpn.org for 10+ years. Pretty sure I've recommended it almost that long ago if you can be bothered to check my post history. They have a nice open-source app for all desktop OS (Windows/Mac/Linux). No idea about mobile. It's not free but is good value imo (especially if you get the 3-year deal when on sale - €79).

I actually do have a VPN back to my own home network. (Runs on my NAS, Allows me to safely use free Wi-Fi, like I'm working from home without the security risks when I'm at hotels or cafes) but that wouldn't help you out-not the type of VPN you're looking for.
