Talk about being a happy loser. Heartbreak City's owner Aidan Schiel lets rip with a wild celebration when his horse finished second, beat a lip in the Melbourne Cup.
The replay. The second is in the bright yellow and drawn near the outside, the winner is in the dark blue with a white band on sleeves and red cap and is 8 from the outside. They come together the first time down the straight. The winner follows the second past the post the first time.
It turns out that Almandin is the third Monsun Cup winner. The other two were Protectionist (2014) and Fiorente (2013). Not too shabby, he's had three of the last four winners.
Unaware that Fiorente was by Monsun! Possibly a solution to British trainers desire to have 'Cup' winner; send a cute English filly over to Bavaria for a good 'seeing to'! Ooooooh errrr missus!!
German bred horses fave been punching well above their weight for a number of years now Kenny. They've even had an Arc winner. I'm sure the more knowledgeable on the forum can supply extra on the subject. I think Monsun is dead.
Manduro, according to Andre Fabre the best he has trained, also by Monsun! Before Danedream I used to get great ante-post prices on German trained horses in major European and American races. Winning the 'Arc' and the 'King George' put paid to this lucrative income stream! Just send the 'fillies' over during Oktoberfest!
Monsun died in 2012 at the age of 22. He was then at stud at Gestut Schlenderhan at Bergheim, which is 20km west of Cologne. Fiorente, I think, stands at stud at Eliza Park International, Victoria, Australia.
I think you're the one who needs a good 'seeing to', BK........... (Sure there are plenty of human stud farms down here who'll take care of you. Keep sober though).
Monsun as a racehorse went on any ground but I always felt he was even better on ground with cut in it. To correct myself, he finished second to Lando in the 1993 German Derby on G/F ground; Lando being very much a good ground specialist, also a damn fine racehorse and successful at stud (sired the second in the MC, Heartbreak City). One of his few poor runs was in the 1994 Coronation Cup at Epsom in which he finished 6th to the André Fabre-trained Apple Tree, on motorway firm ground. Track probably did not suit Monsun either. Monsun passed on the virtue of being able to run on any ground (most of the time) to his progeny. A great credit to his own papa Königsstuhl, and the Tamerlane/Persian Gulf/Bahram lineage.
SH; strangely enough although a sixty two year old 'stayerin' I have two nights out planned this week! The first event will allow me to catch up with some former workmates so who knows; lucky white heather! Koln/Paris/London from 1st January 2017 so I might avail myself of the local tottie (free range, fairtrade or otherwise)! Unless my memory is failing me which is highly likely I seem to recall there being about two or three very good German middle distance horses on the go at the same time as Monsun. Cannot remember if it was at Koln, Munich or Baden Baden that I saw a race with all the local 'Champions' taking part. Probably got the racecard stored away somewhere. Lomitas?
Think that is in nearby Starnberg, don't know anything about it at all. Most of the top German studs are in the west and up north, I believe? It is such a shame that thoroughbred horseracing is basically not popular in the country. They have had some superb racehorses, trainers, and a few top-flight jockeys. Sometimes I think the trainers must feel like giving up the game? Danedream, for example, a wonderful filly, hardly a mention when she won the Arc, the King George at Ascot, don't think ARD even mentioned it. They are football crazy here (bet like hell on games), F1, Ice Hockey (don't know why, they're not very good), Field Hockey (better), Tennis in the days of Becker and Graf, but soon lost interest when they departed the scene, oh, and Handball, which they are pretty adept at.
Think we discussed this before however the reduction in 'bookies' over the last, say, ten years where you can bet on the horses is frightening. From memory there would be about ten in each of Koln and Munich however this seems to have been halved. We also talked about betting on the Scottish 'fourth' division and the Albanian 'third' league! Talking about tennis I always felt a wee bit sorry for Michael Stich who possibly received more attention in the UK than Germany! Have just started reading 'tor! The Story Of German Football' by Uli Hesse. Only twenty or so pages in so it has only covered the move from 'Turnen' and the influence of English gentlemen resident in Germany.
