Seems that the German form is having a good year mate. His rider Cory Brown said that the horse has a tendency to just fall out of the barrier, so I'm not sure that he's capable of being ridden rear the pace. But you might know a bit more about him than I do. I've only seen a couple of his runs, and in those he was well back early. If he can get cover at Flemington, he'd have a huge chance. As much as 150-1 was secured about him, now he's one of the favourites. A lot of people must know something mate.

It looks like another live chance for the Cup, surfaced today at an up country city called Geelong. The dour, French staying type Dunaden showed an unexpected turn of foot when he swamped the the field in the G3 2400m Geelong Cup. The Mikel Delzangles trained 6 year old settled in the last few, but was sent around the pack by Craig Williams, from about the 600. He came wide on the corner and won rather easily, pretty much as Americain did last year in this race. Williams is commited to the horse for the Cup. It was a great trial. Dunaden has been a massive firmer on the back of this win. In from 100-1 to 10-1 third favourite behind Americain and Lucas Cranach.

The other visitor to run well today, was the old pensioner Bauer. Second in the big race in 08, the now 9 year old, ridden by champion jockey Damian Oliver, settled mid-field on the fence. As the pace quicken though, he dropped away a little. He just didn't have the speed to go when the hammer was dropped. But once stoked up, he came hard, late in the race, to run third. Luca Cumani has the old boy in fine fettle. 18-1 for the Cup.

Here's an interesting bit of news. Ever wanted to own a Melbourne Cup runner? US prospect Unusual Prospect is for sale, well at least part of him. Part owner, Barry Abrams of the US, has placed his 40pc share on the market. Bloodstock.com.au is handling the possible sale, which has a 5pm Friday deadline.

Unusual Prospect ran a top trial in the $3,000,000 Caulfield where he came from a mile back, to run a creditable sixth. It was one of the best runs of the race. He looks as though he's crying out for the two mile trip. His price for the big one was slashed from 80-1 to 30-1, on the back of that run. I'm not too sure, but I believe he'll be retired to stud some time after the Cup. The asking price? Just $300,000.

Tenth place returns $115,000. The winner gets $3,300,000.

Latest on the French raider Dunaden who had a lovely win in the Geelong Cup. The following is the update from VRC Handicapper.

“Dunaden was most impressive winning the Geelong Cup yesterday after sustaining a searching run from the back of the field with 58kg and accordingly I have elected to penalise him 0.5kg in the Melbourne Cup for that victory,” Carpenter said.“Dunaden's countryman Americain won the Geelong Cup with 58kg last year and I also lifted his weight from 54kg to 54.5kg in the Melbourne Cup which he went on to win.

“I could not justify an increase of greater than 0.5kg for Dunaden though as he is yet to win at Group 1 or 2 level and the four horses weighted above him in this year's race, Americain, Jukebox Jury, Descarado and Midas Touch, have performed to a higher level.”

The Moonee Valley Cup turned out to be a one act affair. Last year's winner Americain absolutely trotted in. In a race that went along at a leisurely clip, he spent no fuel in about mid field. I was a little worried that as he's set for the two miles, they might drop him when they cranked it up. But he worked into the race to be only a few off them at the 600m. He was held up at this point, but when he was pulled deep, he swamped them in the straight. A very impressive win which will him only continue to firm as favourite for the big one.

Illo, the German horse, also put in a fair effort. He was trapped wide early. He was one of the first to commit and went to the front. He led on the corner, but was no match for the win or second. He looked as though he needed the run.

Just watched some of the replays from down under. Black Caviar won in a hack canter, barely broke sweat. Americain I thought was ULTRA-impressive, has such good tactical speed, Mosse could just put him where he wanted and then press the trigger coming off the bend. Cyc it will take a very good one to lower his colours in the big one.

Sure will. I was amazed at how he came away from them. It reminded me of his Cup win last year.

With 20 odd runners, there will be quite a few chances. Dunaden was impressive.

Mosse, unbeaten in three runs on Americain, said after climbing off the horse. "He is not yet where he was last year leading into the Melbourne Cup. But after this run he will be." He added. "I think he really enjoys Australia. When I asked him to go, he really responded."

Stable foreman Stephanie Nigge, representing absent trainer Alain de Royer Dupre, agreed. "I don't think he is any different (to last year)," she said.

    From out there somewhere.

Business information analysts at IBISWorld has predicted that $6.7 million will be splurged on dresses and suits, $6.18 million on hats and fascinators and almost $6 million on shoes.

    Valuable information, I'm sure.

cyclonic can you explain this to me please

just being on the victoria racing website and read the stewards reports for races at moonee valley.

Race 2 – ESSENDON JEEP STAKES (Listed) - 1600 metres: Prior to the start of the race trainer Mr D Weir advised that Manhattan Maid will be ridden more forward in this event. M Payne explained that Manhattan Maid did not have the necessary early speed to take up a forward position and as a result settled worse than mid-field and raced wide from the 800m and she was of the understanding the filly may be spelled. Trainer Mr D Weir confirmed that Manhattan Maid would now be spelled.

so am i right in thinking that connections of this horse stated beforehand he was going to lead or race prominent?so he got into trouble because his horse didnt race as he stated beforehand?what does spelled mean also?

Last season, in her only three runs, Manhattan Maid showed a fair degree of speed early in her races GP, but this season, in her four runs up to that Moonee Valley race, she's been short of that pace. She's been getting well back. Her trainer, in desperation, decided to try and set a fire under her in this race, so advised the stewards (as he has to when changing riding tactics) that Michelle Payne would be instructed to hunt her along. But she wasn't up to it. Because the trainer told the stewards one thing and the horse did another, they were called in and questioned. Both rider and trainer told the stewards that in their opinion the horse needed to be turned out. Spelling, is taking the horse out of work, for rest purposes. I should imagine, that if the horse is sound, she'll return sometime early next year. I don't think anybody was fined or suspended, it was just one of those racing things that comes along all the time. I hope that helps a bit mate.

Just wondering Cyc how likely is it that Moyenne Corniche will get into the MC without running in the Lexus on Saturday? Really hope he gets a run

Roto, Moyenne Corniche is sweating on a few dropping out at this stage. With a field of 24, he's 27th. But the final declarations won't come until Saturday, so he still might have a chance yet. Luca Cumani is in the same boat with Bauer who is 29th. I'd say at this point mate, that Moyenne Corniche is a 50/50 chance of getting a run. As the field is full of visitors and ex European horses, a lot of people don't think too many will fall by the wayside before Saturday.

PS Ellison's other runner Saptapadi is 28.
