You reckon? I think next season he will be one of two in a first choice CH partnership.

With Vidic if he gets fit, otherwise with Smalling or Jones. Ferdinand will be yet one more season towards retirement next year and his performances are already starting to deteriorate. Jones will be better served as a CM eventually and Evans will still be a reserve.

Even if Jones does stay at centre half then it would be Smalling who switches, to right back, rather than Cahill being in the reserves. There can be absolutely no harm in signing Cahill, we currently have a right winger playing right back and the Brazilians are either A, injured or B, not playing anywhere near well enough. We need this cover and quality.

Cahill wouldn't necessarily be first team at Chelsea either. In fact, given Roman's penchant for expensive imports he's even less likely to get much game time. At Utd he'd have a chance of displacing Smalling and Jones if he plays well. Either way, he's close enough in quality to Smalling and Jones to fit into our squad system and get at least 30-40 games a season in all comps.

So that's Vidic, Smalling, or Jones as potential first choice partnership?

Meaning there are already three people you think good enough for first choice in the squad with Rio and Evans as not bad backup for 4th and 5th choices.

Its a shame in the modern game, if Evans had a season full in there I reckon he'd be the better for it, every time he gets a start he probably knows before a ball is kicked that he'll be out when somene is fit regardless of how he plays

I'd go Vidic Smalling, one of them has to have pace, Jones does not, Jones is a replacement for Vidic really and Smalling Rio in the type of players they are though Jones can play too unlike Vidic, I think anyways

I dunno - Evans has played 20-30 games for Utd for each of the last four seasons. He's not as bad as some make out, but he isn't up to Utd first team standard and I doubt he ever will be. He's a good squad player and one of the reasons Utd do so well is that we have squad players like Evans, Berb, Park, Owen and Gibson who could easily get first team football if they moved to a club outside the top four or top six for some of them. But if we rely on them for too many games we will eventually drop more points compared to if we had better players available.

I'm not convinced with Cahill to be honest, I don't think he's good enough (you can never say that a player will never be good enough) to be our first choice CB. If he wants a move to Chelsea to further his England career then that's understandable, I don't think even Abramovich would be silly enough to not realise that Terry and Cahill could be a possible combination at the back for England at Euro 2012, there's a certain level of understanding already so that's why I assume that he's more likely to be a first choice at Chelsea than at United. Furthermore, who else do Chelsea play at CB other than Terry and Luiz? Ivanovic sometimes? So he's going to be pushing for a regular berth straight away. With United, you can never guess what the defence will be and it's been like that for a few seasons which makes our achievments all that more exceptional.

Let me reiterate, I'm not saying we don't need cover. We do, I'm just not sold that Cahill will be that beneficial in terms of adding quality rather than just quantity.
