Mirror is stating Henderson is injured for about 4 weeks so for our difficult Christmas period we only have Lucas and Allen

Jordan Henderson injury leaves Liverpool with two central midfielders for five games in 15 days

Liverpool’s injury crisis has worsened in the run-up to their crunch holiday-season programme.

Key midfielder Jordan Henderson is the latest victim after his ankle was damaged by Kevin Nolan’s nasty stamp in the West Ham game on Saturday.

And the Reds' manager Brendan Rodgers could even make an emergency foray into the transfer market when the window opens on January 1 to provide badly-needed cover.

With scans confirming that skipper Steven Gerrard’s hamstring trouble will keep him out until the New Year, the news is a huge blow as Liverpool prepare to visit Spurs, Manchester City and Chelsea over a breathless fortnight.

It leaves the Reds with just two central midfielders in Lucas and Joe Allen for a run of five games in 15 days and Rodgers knows they will have to step up before he can move in the transfer window.

Follow the leader: Henderson has joined Gerrard on the Anfield casualty list

    PA

Rodgers said: “Lucas has been excellent for us and he has forced his way into the Brazil side, so he has that quality and experience to step up and take the responsibility.

“Joe looks like he did when he first came here with his movement, his body work and fluency on the ball and that’s what we need right now.

“We have a number of small players on the field but if we have the ball and the other team hasn’t, I think they struggle with it.

“We need that mobility and constant movement in the midfield to get on the ball and knit the game together.

“Steven is such an important player for us, but we have other players and dynamics in the team and they have to step up.”

Gerrard’s scan results confirmed he has a serious hamstring strain that will sideline him for up to a month.

Henderson was limping around the Melwood training ground on Monday in a foot brace.

And then there were two: Allen and Leiva are in for a busy couple of weeks

    Andrew Powell

While his problem is not as serious as his club and international captain's, Henderson is still doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Tottenham - a fixture which will set the tone for the rest of the month.

The results of his scan will determine when he can return to training.

Allen has only just forced his way back into the first team after injury and loss of form.

Rodgers believes both he and Lucas have the quality to replace a player as important as Gerrard.

so... i think we are getting a bit worried here when in fact we have.

    1. sahko. who did play as a holding player before and if a donkey like jones can do it... why not a donkey like sahko.

    2. lucas and allen... stay fit and thats ok. they play

    3. the real question is formation. if rodgers has a brain fart and plays 3-5-2 we are up **** creek. it will not work against the good sides. 4-5-1 all the way and stick in moses and stelring like is said ebfore as wide men and pack it out.

    4. alberto, aspas and coutinho are all wide options too.

its all about the managers choice now. sure options are limited but you can f yourself before you ever cross the white line to start a game or you can make the best of it with the right system

With the latest news that both Gerrard & Hendo are both injured for a few games, our squad is starting to look a little threadbare!

With both Sturridge and Enrique also out, we're down nearly half of our outfield first team <yikes>....god forbid another injury at the weekend.

Given the decent start that we've made and the inconsistency of everyone excluding Arsenal, will FSG step up and realise that January may be the best chance we have had in a long time to in invest in the team to achieve success this year? (By success, I mean top 4). I'd also like them to consider dropping their age limit barrier should the right type of player be available....Kids are great but they won't necessarily help us win this year!

We badly need at least one midfielder, preferably two, and another striker....quality too; no point adding more kids right now! I doubt that we'll have a big pot of funds in January so I fear that we may need to say goodbye to a CB if the right price is offered. Perhaps Agger if he's not getting games....although I'd hate to see him go! Rumours of a cheeky bid for Johnson are also abound.

DO you think FSG will spend? How much? If so where? (and who if you have a preference) and who would you be prepared to let go to fund this?

I think most agree that centre midfield is an area that we can improve, if we keep pace I think FSG will dig deep.

What I said in the other thread....

Think with the injuries to key players ( and mainly midfielders) that may play a big part. We do well, they might keep the hands in the pockets and say Allen, Alberto, Lucas, etc stepped up to the challenge. We do poor and they may realize uh oh we need help.

I hope we get the help regardless!

Anybody know what we spent last couple of years in Jan? I wouldn't count the Suarez year as that was just a crazy January fueled by the Torres sale.

Suarez was bought before Torres handed in the request and that deal was in the works from the go. Probably 22 mil, 20 mil I believe last year.

EDIT: Torres and Suarez.... what could have been. Even the Torres at that time was still getting goals and showing his prowess here and there.

Something that I often wonder......Torres smashed Chelsea to bits a few weeks before he was sold, i'd of loved to see an in form two play together. May not have suited Suarez or Torres but something tells me that Suarez can play anywhere....even GK for Uruguay! <whistle>

It would have worked, Suarez could have played behind, at the time Suarez was used to playing out wide as Forlan was the main man at Uruguay and I think Huntelaar was the main st at Ajax. <ok>

dont think RVP would want to go back to Arenal then lol, or a move to City?

havent seen much of Kagawa to know if any good, heard he is good, but utd players tend to be over hyped so i take it with a pinch of salt nowdays.

I'd have thought the injuries would make them realise we're on thin ice a bit with regards to squad depth.
The thing is that if we're genuine contenders for trophies it's easier to hold on to quality players even if they're not starters every week.
The only other way to hold them is by throwing a ****load of money at them, and that's a road I don't want us to go down.
Anyone who is there purely for the money is a mercenary anyway and often lacks the commitment we need.

Make success bonuses big. So lower wages but head turning big bonuses for CL qualification and maintenance...championships etc. Cuts the risk of future Coles and Downings....hungry players.

On OP, as you say, FSG must recognize that the instability of the other teams we thought were still 2 years ahead of us is an opportunity to steal some of that time back. BR himself believes the squads thin and periods of poor form and now injury have proved that. One more injury to say Lucas or Allen and we're in trouble.

So time to spend on quality.......but.....that's the point. Don't gamble just to do it. They assembled this transfer team, trust it to say whether the right players are there to buy in January, not just players available some of us fans think are class.

Identify actual improvements to the squad but realise that means you'll now have to actually pay bigger money for it.
