Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful that Glen Johnson will be fit to return 'in the next couple of weeks'.

The 29-year-old defender injured his ankle during the 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the beginning of the month.

"Glen is the type of player that you don't realise until he's not in the team, what you are missing," Rodgers said.

"He is athletic and he started the season very, very well. Against Manchester United he was outstanding.

"He's got the boot off his foot and he is working very hard. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks he will be back."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers delivered a positive update on the fitness of defender Daniel Agger at his pre-Sunderland press conference at Melwood on Friday.

The Denmark international missed the Reds' 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Manchester United in midweek after completing almost an hour against Southampton last weekend.

Asked for an injury update, the manager told reporters: "We are what we are from the other night.

"Daniel Agger will hopefully come back into the reckoning; he has trained in the last couple of days. Other than that, it will be more or less the same squad.

"I can only work with the players that I have available. We have got a few injuries and most of them have been unfortunate injuries.

"I can only concentrate on the players we have available now and we'll maximise what we can out of that group. They are working very hard and working well."

Joe Allen will not be involved, however, with the Welshman requiring further recovery time from a hamstring complaint before he becomes available again.

"We felt leading up to the Swansea game that Joe's hamstring was getting better," said Rodgers.

"But he still has a bit of time to go on that. He's obviously working hard with the medical team but he's not fit yet."

The boss was questioned on the fitness of top scorer Daniel Sturridge too, and quickly quashed any suggestions that the striker could be rested following the return of Luis Suarez.

"There's no taking him out. With Daniel, we've seen this season that even when he's not 100 per cent fit he's still an amazing player," the Northern Irishman added.

"He's still a player that will put defenders on the back foot. His pace and power is getting up to speed.

"He's a player that is very important for our team. He's a catalyst at the top end and even when he's not at 100 per cent he's still a top player."

Suarez played the whole match at Old Trafford on Wednesday and Rodgers provided two pieces of good news on behalf of the Uruguayan.

He said: "He's fine. He became a father for the second time yesterday so he's on top of the world."

Can't wait for Coutinho, Johnson and Enrique to come back - they will bring better balance to this current 3-5-2 formation.

    Rodgers on LFC injury latest.
Brendan Rodgers is expecting his squad to be bolstered by the return of several key first-team players from injury following the international break.
The manager is optimistic he'll be able to call on the services of Glen Johnson, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen once the Reds' schedule resumes following next week's recess.

Johnson suffered a high ankle sprain during the 1-0 win over Manchester United at the start of September, while Cissokho and Allen have been sidelined since the Capital One Cup clash with Notts County on August 27 with ankle and hamstring problems respectively.

Liverpool are also without Philippe Coutinho until towards the end of October after he underwent shoulder surgery and Sebastian Coates is set to miss most of the season with a knee problem.

Providing an update on the fitness of his squad, Rodgers told reporters at Melwood: "Glen's out on the field and hopefully after the international break he'll be ready to come back into the squad.

"We're okay. Aly Cissokho has trained over the course of the last week or so, so I think after the international break he'll be fine and fit. Joe Allen likewise - he should be ready for the Newcastle game.

"Glen Johnson and Coutinho will not be long after.

"Obviously Sebastian Coates will be that bit longer and has a bit more to do yet, but apart from that we're getting back to our numbers now."

Great news - Johnson and Cissokho should give us better balance in the full back positions, and Coutinho will provide the link.

3 great players to come back into our side and hopefully we can push on <ok>

Coutinho not back for the weekend then. Shame but we should be able to beat West Brom without him....in theory.
