One of my friends broke his leg a few days ago, and has been given time off work at 50% Pay. This led me on to thinking about whether footballers should only be paid a set percentage of their pay if they are injured. The percentage would be written into their contract, and would apply to any injury they suffered that meant they couldn't work (play). Do you think this would be feasible? What are your thoughts on a system like this?
The problem with that is that given the importance of wages to players these days you'd probably find that the competitive nature of the game would begin to disappear. Players would be more reluctant to tackle aggressively. I like your reasoning but it's flawed.
Don't most players earn an appearance fee? I guess that'd work similarly, if you're injured you don't earn as much.
Hmm, I understand your points. Maybe something like 25% of their pay could be appearance fees? Or is that how it works already?
So Bale should have been deducted pay after Charlie Adam cut him in half last season? He was injured through no fault of his own, while he was at work. Now Carlo Knievel; That's a different matter altogether!
Hmm. That's a good point. My argument is getting more and more flawed I see . Maybe only in the instance of something like Cudicini's accident, or David James reaching for the remote?
I can see your point Ens, but if we are injured outside work, through no fault of our own (ie not mountaineering or swimming with sharks etc) and cannot work, a reduction in pay is harsh.
Because, unless you are self-employed, they are your conditions of employment. If the bank would give me 25% off my mortgage, Sainsbury's cut my shopping bill by a quarter and I got cheap electricity gas and petrol, it would be doable. What do you think the chances are?
An appearance fee would be a good idea, though. It'd make players like Pav/Tevez actually want to fight for their place and play.
The last one is curious. Why would any player get a bonus for the team winning if they were not part of it? Salary - always paid Appearance - further 10% of Salary Win bonus further 20% of Salary. That's how I would do it.
The problem is, players and their agents hold all the aces right now, (as well as the jacks, queens and kings.) As long as this remains the case, the same obscene levels of pay will continue. That is, until this bubble bursts, (which it surely must at some point.)
I'm not sure but I'd guess it would be flat money with no win bonus if you're injured, which is enough of a reduction I suppose. Its similar to how some company sick schemes work, basic money only, don't think they'll be getting Statutory Sick Pay though!
