In today's market what would a 25 year old Shearer be worth?

<laugh> Mike wouldn't offer £15million for anyone, even a 25yr old Shearer. He'd just have Charnley read a statement reaffirming that we do not do trophy signings.

Sadly Magpie, thats the way it goes these days. Long gone are the days of local clubs with local players, and local owners. Ashley might have rescued you, but the real reason he got involved was for how much money he could make. At the other end of the scale we have Chelsea and City financed massively by megarich playboys. Then we have the Glaziers involvement with United, and Yanks calling the shots at Loserpool, and the chicken breeders at Blackburn.

And who suffers most? Us damned supporters, ripped off at every opportunity by owners who probably don't even understand the offside rule.

Tarnished? Really? I have no qualms acknowledging how good he was- superb. However he was a very 'british' style player and not as well suited to the way the game is played in other countries as it is here. And the thread says how much he would be worth nowadays. Correct me if I'm wrong but shearer used his physical assets as large pat of his game, and with the modern game being a lot softer now, would it not be safe to assume that he wouldn't be as effective.

I'm not poo-pooing a Newcastle legend but if I've said anything that is deemed unreasonable and based upon an illogical dislike of anything nufc please point this out.

If his style of play was still in fashion 80m plus, 30m to 40m I'd say with the way the game is played now. It's all about the false number 9 these days. Shearer is a traditional number 9 not a lot of call for them at the top clubs(don't understand why though). Footy has evolved.

Apologies Indestructable, I misread it. Still think in todays market , which is massively over priced, that Shearer would be over 100 mil. Andy Caroll being a classic example. of over pricing. Comparing Shearer to Caroll is like comparing a Porsche against Ford Fiesta

A difficult question, as it all depends on the club.

Top world class strikers are not easy to come by, and depends on the situation of the clubs at the time.

Man U, a transition period, but have wads of cash, so maybe 40-50 million.

Chelsea, christ, if they want Rooney, surely would be prepared to fork out 60 for him.

The daft scousers, would probably bid about 300 million for him, and even name a candle after him.

The Scousers are going to have money to burn again soon with the Suarez sale.

Well the muppets paid 35 for Carroll, so hopefully are preparing a bid around the same for Connor Wickham, **** it, they can have Altidore thrown in.

To be fair, I really like Liverpool's recent signings. If they get Sanchez + 60 million for Suarez, that would be an amazing deal. Suarez is a world class player, but Sanchez is ffffing amazing as well.

In my opinion, £50 million pounds for Sanchez wouldn't be unreasonable in the current market.

Wouldn't that reduce the fee to something like £1M ?

I'm actually going to qualify it. If Liverpool get Sanchez, and as low as £10 million pounds, I think it'll be the most idiotic transfer decision since Barca bought Ibrahimovic for Eto'o plus a fortune.

Aw come on, he's American, so has huge marketing appeal.

He can do an ad for Macs, 'i'm loving it'..

I don't know why they've gone out of fashion though, Like Gonads said, with the quality of players that can be put behind of a world class traditional number 9 the goals would be plentiful. We were talking about them on our forum, I'd love us to get a traditional number 9 with bags of pace to give us something different and best we could do was Jordan Rhodes with a bit of development. They're a dying breed, nobody wants them, nobody is developing them. So strange.

no matter what today's football is about, and maybe the No 9 shirt no longer stands for the centre forward. it still doesn't take away the quality of Shearer. Any club today would be interested in signing him. and the queue would stretch around St. James park

Would have loved to have seen him at Old Trafford, in a red shirt, but it never came to fruition. In my opinion, he was THE BEST all round striker in the prem, bar none
