I can't see how we could be doing much worse than we are? Bottom of the table 4 points adrift, fewest wins, one of the worst goal differences, amongst the lowest scorers' manager doesn't know his best XI etc etc. Even with 3 centre backs alongside him Konch is caught constantly out of position, he has poor distribution and is a sending off waiting to happen - I can't see how Schlupp can be any worse?
We' re where we are in the league because we're not quite good enough at the back OR up front. Neither is miles away, but neither are strong enough to make us anything special in a strong league this year. We've only conceded the same as Newcastle who are 11th, and scored 1 less than West Brom who are now looking safe in 13th. So yes, we could be doing worse on both fronts - but obviously we could be doing better. Four points with a game in hand is hardly cut adrift either. Konch has been hit and miss for me. He was terrible against Everton, but he put in some strong performances earlier in the season. He is more defensive minded than Schlupp, who I discussed in my last post, but for me I'd play DeLaet on the left. I thought he did well in that position and I'm not really sure why he was pulled.
Im quite frankly shocked that we have never really had decent competition for Paul Konchesky since he signed. When ever we have signed a left back they have been pretty embarrasing. Michael Ball or Zoumana Bakoyogo anyone? We all knew from 2 years ago that Konchesky was the weak link in our backline and when we got promoted we all thought that was going to be one of the first positions Nigel strengthen yet its the only one that hasn't even been strengthened in the slightest. We brought in goalkeepers, right backs, centre halfs, wingers, midfielders and strikers but no left back Konchesky has done enough this season to show his worth in the squad but as undisputed left back its quite frankly a shambles
