Well, as TM is about to trigger article 50 and set us on our way to leaving the EU, I felt it was time to start a new thread which is more relevant. Inflation has edged up to 2.3% mainly due to the increased cost of crude, as it is paid for in dollars and there has been approximately a 20% drop in the exchange rate. I've just seen this article - https://uk.news.yahoo.com/uk-based-airlines-told-move-093308600.html and this could have a major impact on jobs. OK KIO, there will be agricultural vacancies, but they don't really replace the SKILLED posts that will be lost if this move happens. The cost of some DIY products has also gone up 20% since Jan and I feel that this is only the beginning.
The last thread of this ilk degenerated pretty significantly into a slanging match. We're a football forum and whilst I don't think any of the mods have an issue with off-topic discussion, we do if it's going to leave us with a forum devoid of people to discuss football. I wouldn't want us to lose people to arguments, or have to consider bans for taking things too far, so if this thread degenerates similarly then I think we'll consider locking it and discouraging further Brexit arguments. So, fair warning and all that, play on...
Here we go again #projectfear Short term pain for long term gain, it's a price worth paying to regain our sovereignty IMO
I'm sure diehard remainers will blame every negative thing to happen on 'Brexit' and diehard leavers will rejoice about every positive thing that happens as because of 'Brexit'......while everyone else gets on with their lives.
. But that's the thing remainers don't understand, even if there is a significant downside in terms of the economy or anything else, most leavers will say it was the right decision. On the ballot paper I saw, it never said do you think financially the country will be better off inside or outside the EU.
That may well be true, canario, but would 'most leavers' be enough for a majority overall? We'll have to wait and see when and if that downturn happens, I guess.
As any fool knows, we've essentially been in a recession for over a year and the figures are saved only on the technicality of Government borrowing. As for wages - what they said: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/mar/24/brexit-vote-experts-data-bank-of-england So the turkeys have voted for Christmas, but frankly I'm wondering whether I should be past caring as it is not me that is going to suffer, it's the suckered workers in the North and backwaters who've been taken for a merry ride. I kind of feel sorry for them. I get why they are angry - they've been treated like **** by everyone for so many years so they think "how much worse could it be". Well the answer is, still a lot worse. And they've been wildly misled by establishment journalists like Gove and Johnson. They've then been given a false dream by establishment shouters like Farage. It's difficult to see how they could have voted any other way given that no-one was pointing out how much the EU has protected them from these idiots over the years (why else do you think they hate the EU...) In the 1980s, the Bullingdon Club used to go around smashing up restaurants for laughs. Those same people are now smashing up the country for laughs. Plus ca change.
Maybe the 'Turkeys' have voted to be let out of the coop before the 'protective' roof collapses in on all that remain inside.........whilst being aware that foxes pose a threat outside the 'Turkeys' are willing to put up with a short term struggle to find more comfortable shelter away from the rats.
Hang on a second, is this a brexiter making big bold predictions about the future? I thought any predictions were banned on the basis that we cannot possibly know so they can't be true? How do you know this will happen WCP? What if it doesn't? Will you admit it was a bad idea then? Doubt it. Good to see you've finally realised that there are no actually good reasons to have voted Brexit. There are only arbitrary emotional beliefs and an irrational desire to kick people out of their own country.
Can't see any predictions in my post Rob....also no indication as to which way I voted. The way I see it is that whatever happens good, bad or indifferent we will never know if the other way would have been better, worse or similar.
er, our democracy is markedly worse than the EU's. if that's what you voted for, you've shot yourself in the foot.
You were predicting the collapse of the EU. You are wrong that we will never know - we know that the collapse in the currency was caused by the Brexit vote. We know that oil price rises were caused by the collapse in the currency. We know that oil price rises were largely responsible for the hike in inflation. We know that market slow down means people are almost certainly going to get lower than inflation pay rises, because inflation has risen. So we know people will be poorer just because of the Brexit vote (and Brexit hasn't happened yet...) We also know that tariff rises lead directly to increased costs and falls in exports. So when tariffs start to bite, we will know that will have been a result of the Brexit deal. We know that occupiers are moving jobs abroad and that is because they will not be able to do their work in the UK after Brexit. That will result in fewer jobs, less in taxes. We also know that the Government has had to contribute hundreds of millions to keep car factories in the North and South West from moving jobs abroad because those car manufacturers wanted to leave due to Brexit. That means that's less money in tax to go on other things, because it's going to cover the losses of private overseas companies. I could go on and on and on. Read the article above. This isn't project fear - this is project reality as all of those things are facts which are happening. We will know almost exactly what is and isn't caused by Brexit. So while we can't know for certain what will happen, we definitely will know what has happened and why. Don't let the journalists and politicians persuade you otherwise - you're not stupid and are perfectly capable of coming to a logical conclusion rather than listening to their hysterics
Surprise! Surprise! I'm on the opposing side of the argument to Rob! It just makes me even more convinced that I voted the right way!
No I wasn't predicting anything Rob I was suggesting a reason why so called 'Turkeys' voted a certain way. Your right that we should know what happens as a result of Brexit but we won't know what might have happened had we voted Remain because it didn't happen and claiming to know what would have happened is impossible. I voted to leave partly because a large number of 'Remainiacs' wanted me to vote to remain in a 'reformed' EU but gave no idea of the reforms or timescale or what they would do if unspecific reforms failed to be achieved.....
