I've read all these pages and all I can say is, a few pages back there were eight bridesmaids not nine.

PS. I tried to find Land of Nod once and couldn't. But it is meant to be near Holme on Spalding Moor.

You're right - I'd noticed that too. Perhaps there was a ninth bridesmaid who doesn't exist but also does exist because some people believe it does?

I think they were there to help out the seven brothers, but I guess it depends which side you're on. <ok>

Link to the nine bridesmaids. But who spotted the gorilla walking across?

Speaking of gingers, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Land of Green Ginger. Is it on Humberside or Hullside and does anybody actually say "White-friar-gate?"

Ah, ginggers*, some of the few people that can be sure they weren't adopted.

How DO you spell it when it isn't said with J's?

Whitefrigate is how we say it. My (thinks she is posh but isn't really) boss calls it White friar gate and we chortle.

The idea was a sound idea, Humberside, North & South could counter the large area called Yorkshire in attracting investment instead of it being swallowed up by the likes of Leeds/Bradford/Doncaster/Huddesfield/ and many other Yorkshire cities and towns. But 2 things went wrong, first the administration of the area was crap and the promised attraction of the Humber Bridge for investment never materialised because it took so long to build and was way overdue. The total sum of visible investment was Kimberly Clark on the South bank, although petro chemicals investment continued on both banks, tolls were too high due to the clause in the Humber Bridge act of parliament. And finally the antipathy between Yorkshire and Lincolnshire people towards each other meant that age old prejudices remain and in the end the people wanted to change back. The end was nigh. But Humberside resided in the Hull Daily Mail way back in the early 60's if I remember where there use to be feature by John Humber I believe.

And the banks of the Humber are too far apart. Newcastle - Gateshead are linked by oodles of bridges/tunnels.

Bollocks - it's down to a recessive gene. Even if both parents do not have red hair themselves, both can be carriers for the gene and have a redheaded child.

We only got the Humber Bridge Stanley because of a bribe by the then Labour Government with Barbara Castle as the Transport Minister. Then had no overall majority so the deal was vote for Labour and get your bridge, what they didn't mention was all the strings attached the main one being that if the debt wasn't paid off the burden would fall on the rate (council tax these days) payers. And of course the budget went way over estimates partly due to engineering problems during the construction of the South Bank tower where they found a stream underneath the bed of the River Humber which also caused most of the delays in construction.
