You are being obtuse. I realise now. I'm not talking about an administrative/political entity. I'm referring to the fact that places which have a close proximity to the Humberside - e.g. Hull, Hessle, Brough, Paull, Grimsby, Immingham are all in a geographical Humberside. They might be cities, boroughs, towns or villages. It makes no difference to the fact that they border on the Humber (= South Hull).

Nonsense. They already have terms to locate them, the additional one is meaningless pap. Thye're not geographically Humberside at all, because your version of what that boundary is seems to differ from everyone elses. Much of Hull isn't at the side of the Humber at all. My house isn't for a kick off. By your version, I should now be Hullside, which puts The Deep into a black hole.

That's not obtuse, it's simply a statement of fact. Your attempt at redifining where this oddity is now supposed to be simply highlights how ridiculous it is.

We have names for these areas, why cock the job up with meaningless piffle?

Isn't that when you're lazy and can't be arsed, or am I mixing it up with a sort of African gazelle?

Firstly, my version doesn't differ from everyone else's; secondly, places can be in two (or more) differently named areas - e.g: Anlaby, in Haltemprice, in the East Riding.

I've just checked and I'm 6km from the Humber(as the crow flies), but only 50m from North Cave Beck.

Having checked further, I see that there's becks all over the place, so I'm contacting Burnsy to see if he can get them to change the name to BBC Radio Beckside, so it more accurately reflects where most of us live. <ok>

country creation date: 1st april 1974. radio humberside began broadcasting in february 1971. so that's three years of media mentions you missed. you probably had radio one on like the rest of us.

from wiki: "Unlike Merseyside, which was used colloquially the term was adopted as an official term in 1964 when the planning region of Yorkshire and Humberside was created consisting of the East, West Ridings of Yorkshire and Parts of Lindsey from Lincolnshire. From that time on the Humberside name was actively used to market the area.[8] In 1971 the newly launched local BBC radio station was named Radio Humberside"

It differs from the former admin, the Police, Radio, Fire Brigade and most of the other comments on this thread. Of course places can and do have more than one name depending on the scale you're working to. Trying to invent another one, that relies on several of the existing ones to describe it is a laughable position. <laugh>

i really can't believe the stance dmd is taking on this one. he's as wrong as wrong can be, despite his assertion that blampey is in the wrong. as much as i despised the whole concept of the county of humberside, the area around absolutely any river X can be referred to as Xside. unquestionably, irrefutably. any river can have a riverside. the area around the river humber that can be referred to as humberside needn't, and in my opinion doesn't, match up with the boundaries of the dead county of humberside. i have no idea where the limits to the Xside area around river X extend to. they may be defined by geographical boundaries or other limiting factors.

    See above...It's an estuary,not a river. <ok>

It COULD be, but people aren't referring to the area around the estuary. They're referrring to Withernsea, Scunthorpe, Pocklington, Hornsea, which is clearly bollocks.

The area directly around the Estuary already has names for the differing geographic bits, so trying to create one homogonous lump out of so many diverse parts renders it ridiculous.

The purpose of a name is to help clearly identify something. All those somethings that fall within your rather odd version, already have names that do that well and have served them for years.

You and the few other defenders can't even agree between you where the boundaries could possibly be. <laugh>
