Batman Begins was quite clever as it made the whole storyline believable (training to become a ninja etc). Dark Knight was epic - loved it and is one of the few films that I can watch over and over again. Going to see Dark Knight Rises tonight - read a few bad reviews already ... Anyways, I bet it can't be worse than the crap Joel Schumacher served up!
lucky! begins is average, the dark knight is legendary and the new one i hope will be as good.... but noble is bursting my bubble
Not too fussed if this one has no action at all in it! It's all about the story and intelligent plot with Nolan's Batman films, looking forward to seeing it - has got great reviews from the critics
it has to be "dark" it has to be either action or a thriller with twists... if its purely just formulaic and milking the thing then its pointless. the issue i think is the joker was so damned good anything else is compared to it so i'll be open minded and go see it.
I think Nolan has proved that his films don't have to confirm to any pre-conceived notion. The previous two films have had, imo, different tones and angles and the last one was a truly dark film not because of the action or twists (what twists?) but because of the psychological damage the joker caused on batman. I fully expect this to be carried on into this film and maybe for batman to be a slightly different (damaged) person as a result of what happened in the last film. As for the joker, no villain can ever be as good as that - but get the impression that the last film is about batman more than bain so not an issue for me.
Ledger did a great job and the Joker is such a great character. It's hard to see any other villain being able to live up to it. Nolan is a great director - I watched the Prestige a few weeks ago and loved it. If anyone told me that I would enjoy a film about some old school magicians, I would have laughed in their faces.
Upon first watching, I thought Batman Begins was compelling. It didn't strike me as a great film but it was very good, and the casting and plot made me want to see the next film. The Dark Knight I thought was amazing. Great story, great characters, great acting, great action. Upon first watching, it made me want me to immediately watch the film again. When I re-watched the films a few times, Batman Begins went up in my estimation and The Dark Knight dropped a little (only a little - it's still a favourite of mine). Batman Begins is a more subtle and nuanced film than it is given credit for. They are both pretty much on a par for me now; and the new film only needs to be average (at worst) for the trilogy to be, to my mind, the greatest comic-based trilogy ever made. With cast I've seen added for the new film (e.g. Hardy and Hathaway), I doubt it'll be average. I really rate Nolan's films. He says each film in the Batman trilogy had its own motif or theme. Batman Begins was centred around 'Fear'; The Dark Knight around 'Chaos', and The Dark Knight Rises is supposed to describe 'Pain'. I think he did very well encapsulating the themes of the first two films, so I can't wait to see how he handles Pain in the last one. I've got some money together (it's a little tight at the moment) and I'll go see it this weekend. Looking forward to it. I might even take a look at Prometheus, too. (If you're skint and treating yourself why not go nuts!) No spoilers, you guys!
Don't get me wrong, the third film is in no way a bad film. Just had a listen to Mark Kermode's review, and he kinda hits it on the head. As a film buff, you have to admire how brave and bold the film making is, a very complex story that demands intelligence, it can be slow at times, as it is telling such a complex tail, and Kemode can praise it on so many levels, and yet, Batman Begins is still his favourite. For me, it is still a summer blockbuster, but it tries to avoid that, and in doing so, will not make everyone happy, but you cannot deny the quality and craft.
You took your lad to the movie marathon from 12pm to 8am, or did you take him to another showing? Also, if your lad liked it and cried a little at the end then I'd say that's a decent endorsement of the film's ability to make the viewers connect with the characters on and emotional level. Either that or you stood on his foot.
He's 11 and thinks everything is the best ever, until the next thing comes along 5 minutes later. He has the attention span of a Chelsea....I mean Man Citeh fan
I think that Nolan has done a great job of progressing the character, I'm a Batman fan and have read many of the stories over the years. Begins is great as it gives a great introduction to a complex character but he had to evolve and was never going to continue the Begins vibe it just wouldn't have worked. In Dark Knight again he is great at developing the edge that Batman lives on, the scene in the cell with Joker is superb. There is no other place to go with Batman without getting to extremely fan based story telling. I haven't seen the new film but would be unhappy with anything but a brutal, violent action movie. The time to build and develop the character is in the past and has been done, an explosive exit is what is needed and from what I've read or heard this film delivers that.
