Unbelievable night. Was in the clockstand paddock and every time there was a surge I ended up on the running track. God knows what it was like in the Roker End. Weird how your memory plays tricks on you. After watching replays of the goals so many times I can only remember it in black and white.
I was thinking earlier to mention the FA cup games against Arsenal and Spurs in the early 60's, those games, both sell outs and crowds in excess of 65,000. A young mid table second Division side taking on the top teams of the day no one gave us a chance. Arsenal 2-1 was loud enough, but the Spurs Game topped it, as we got a draw and almost beat the team that went on to win the first ever League and Cup double. Danny Blanchflower the Ireland and Spurs captain, in his memoirs, said that day at Roker Park was the loudest and most frightening atmosphere he had ever played in, and it was .
Some cracking posts on here, brings back some great memories. I flew back from Nice for the 1992 semi without a ticket or much chance of getting one. I arrived early and just kept repeating 'any tickets' to everyone who passed. After two hours I was about to give up when a couple of Sunderland lads, in their 80's, actually responded. "Are you Sunderland son?" Yes. At which point they asked me a series of questions, about the club, going back decades. When I'd satisfied them I wasn't a tout they handed me a ticket. I asked them how much buy they wouldn't take a penny. They explained there'd normally be three of them who'd travelled together for 60 years. When I asked where their mate was they explained he'd died that morning and his lass had sent a message to the bus. "He'd have wanted a proper Sunderland supporter to have his ticket." I grabbed the ticket, went to the offy and bought a bottle of brandy for us to share, I knew I'd be sitting with them. A great day with cracking blokes, they went mental when we scored.
Martin Scott mate, aye Russell got 4. I used to love Scott, admittedly there wasn’t a lot of quality about at the time. Lethal left foot he had. I’ll never forget the absolute carnage when he scored a pen v the Mags last derby at Roker, felt like we’d celebrated for 5 mins looked over at Fulwell End was still absolute carnage going on. We won’t talk about the result like.
I remember that day vividly, I wasn’t there, too young I guess, but I remember that I lived along by the Ivy House then, after there was a kick about in the car park about 50 folk all ages. Brilliant.
21st March 1998. It wasn’t an important game or anything like that. It was our first season at the Stadium of Light and we beat Portsmouth 2-1. Phillips and Johnston. It was the last game me and my old fella attended together. He died 21st March 2003. It sticks in the memory. That would definitely be the game I returned to but it would be for sentimental reasons. Cheers.
the play off semi 2nd leg 1990, next to winning the f a cup for me ! sorry i have to include home game Chelsea twice, the 1985 league cup semi 1st leg, and the F A cup 6th round replay, gordon (Ronaldo) armstrong with that header ! stadium of light 4-1 vs Chelsea that was the best performance from a Sunderland team i have ever seen.
Been a brilliant thread this. I am sure most of us can relate to most of the posts and remember the games. I am canny blotto after staying out after the game. I am still struggling to pick one game. Cardiff away when Clarky broke his leg. Drew 1-1 if I recall. Brill turn out and just stands out. Not saying that was the best as there is so many factors to take into account.
That should've been spoiled for us because we could only get Mag tickets ... ... instead it made the night. We were standing up cheering as the pitch invaders ran into the halfway line force field That footage is now used by lecturers explaining to foreign language students the meaning of 'someone"s arse falling out'.
Chelsea away Milk Cup S/F 2nd leg. Surreal game and cracking day away with the Stanley Pirates. As per.
A day that lasted a week! We knew it was going to be mad when a coach picked us up at Trowell services .... ... we got a massive cheer as we got on, crazy! I can't remember who's coach we came back on but we just jumped on the first that was moving.
