How can it be in your own hands? If, (accepted a big 'if'), Spurs and Newcastle win their remaining games, Arsenal will not be in the top 4! Even if only one of those win their matches, Arsenal will be down to 4th and the prospect of not qualifying for the Champions League should Chelsea take that spot as 2012 winners!
We will deserve 3rd if we end up 3rd by the last week. Even if this means that we get there by Newcastle and Spurs unlikely losing both their remaining games. This discussion is pointless. The league system, unlike cup competitions, almost ensures that teams end up where they deserve to be. Doesn't matter if you drop points more consistently, or drop a lot of points in one patch like Spurs.
I think the hardest thing to take for any football team is not seeing progress. If the trend is good then fans are generally happy. When the trend is downwards then its harder to accept whoever you are.
