Nothing against the Scots, but if it is Andy "Paraguay Shirt" Murray that meets Federer in the final, I'll be wearing a Swiss Shirt all day

    I won't support anti-English Andy Murray

If the English can survive the attentions of the Luftwaffe, the IRA and al-Qaeda, then I quite fancy our chances against Andy Murray.

If the English can survive the attentions of the Luftwaffe, the IRA and al-Qaeda, then I quite fancy our chances against Andy Murray.

I don't really object to anyone despising the English - we can take it - but hypocritical backtracking gets right up my Wembley Way and puts my Morris dancer out of joint.

And it's a bit rich for Murray to suddenly decide that he loves the English after all.

It is unfortunate for sunny Murray that he is in a sport that is largely an English phenomenon.

We go tennis crazy for two weeks a year, and that fortnight is spent in the leafy South West London suburb of that most English of settings - Wimbledon.

All this "True Brit" stuff about Murray is true tosh. Come on! Murray is a true Scot and he is proud of it.

Good luck to him - Scotland is a great country full of exceptional people. And I don't just say that because it always annoys sourpuss characters like Murray when an Englishman doesn't share his puerile prejudice.

Unlike Murray, I would cheer Scotland in any football match they played, unless the opponents were England. Murray, of course, has gone on record as saying he would support, "anyone but England" the tip of a toxic iceberg of anti-Englishness. In fact, I appreciate his honesty. When I take my seat at the Centre Court today, as I do on one day every year, Andy Murray will not be representing my country or me.

I am probably not a very good Englishman - I can never really get excited about the flag of St. George. I stick a couple on my car on the rare occasions that England qualify for a major football tournament, but that red cross on a white background always has a touch of the white van about it.

I grew up under the red, white and blue of the Union Jack. That's my beautiful flag .

That's the flag that moves my heart.

But I am enough of an Englishman for my hackles to rise when we get stick from a character like Andy Murray, who wouldn't dream of ranting about anyone but the English about their race and creed.

The English are meant to take it. And, as I say, we certainly can.

But don't expect me to warm to you just because you wrap yourself in a Union Jack for a photoshoot and mutter a few platitudes about how your dear old granny was from south of the border. Too little, too late.

And by the lukewarm enthusiasm Murray has inspired on the former Henman Hill (Murray Mount? It sounds like something you suck), I think that there are plenty of people at Wimbledon who feel exactly the same.

If Murray just wanted to be pro-Scottish, that would have been fine. The fact that he chose to make anti-English remarks set his stall out, as the pundits would say.

I wish him well at Wimbledon. It would be fantastic to see a Scot win the men's singles next Sunday. But deep in my bones I believe Andy Murray is one of those characters who genuinely dislike England and the English.

He is not the only one. There are plenty of them. And that's why, when Murray faces Frenchman Richard Gasquet on the Centre Court later today, I will be shouting - vive la France! Richard Gasquet never gave me the impression he hates the English.

And if Murray throws his pongy sweatbands into the Centre Court crowd and they land near me, I shall chuck them straight back.

Bit harsh Shaun Derry not even on the bench. He sweats blood for our club in my opinion.

Don't really get the point of that Swords. Tennis is one of those sports that I've grown out of. Used to love the Borg, McEnroe, Connors and just about Becker era, when they all had the same equipment and the courts were quicker, now it's a bit dull, though if people tell me Nadal and Federer are just as good as the old guys, I'll believe them. All the Henman/ Murray stuff is just cringeworthy. These are very wealthy professionals who play for themselves, not a country.
