I'd like to see Hoddle in as soon as possible so the distraction of Arry & England is sorted.

He won the 2005 CL with an averageish team that wasn't his own, I actually consider that harder than winning with a team you've had money to spend on. He won the FA cup in 2006 then we made the CL final AGAIN in 2007 followed by some incredible football (4 nil against Real) in the season where we finished second. He has downsides but he's been without doubt one our best manager within the last 20 years and I wouldn't mind seeing him back managing us TBH.

Why is it Hoddle's name keeps coming up? His man-management is abysmal, he freezes out players he doesn't like, and his record is hardly inspiring.

Agreed. once again, great theorist, good planner and tactician. Personal skills - non existent.

Not sure about his tactics either, to be honest - he got them eliminated from the FA Cup because he wouldn't substitute an obviously injured Terry Phelan, for example.

Benitez is good at coming up with a plan for a game or Champion's League series. But I think he's all wrong for Spurs. Too negative, poor man-management, too much baggage. I remember him costing Liverpool the league by insisting on resting players too often. I think him coming to Spurs would go over like a lead balloon.

At a guess, you can see Roman being dumb enough to bring Benitez into Chelsea, or maybe taking advantage of Cruyff's douchebaggery to bring in Van Gaal...leaving us free to bring in Guardiola!

I'll take the Hoddle remark as a joke. Hoddle is a God,you mention bankrupting a team which is a charge leveled at Harry more than once isn't it? Ok again some interesting points and to be honest your views have swayed me the other way into thinking Benitez is not for Spurs. Thanks again for the feedback.

  12. TMT, I'm not saying Benitez bankrupted LFC, as clearly he didn't. I'm merely making the point that even with the millions that 'Pool spent during the Benitez era he didn't achieve what he should have, and that his record is not as impressive as the Mousers claim.

Benitez isn't a bad manager but it's a no for me.

He took charge of a Liverpool team at a time where they were still considered a real force in Europe and one of the very best in the league. He made some poor decisions over the years in transfers - the sales of Owen and Alonso and the signings of the likes of Aquilani and Keane just didn't materialise from big money deals (the loss of Alonso greatly damaged their at the time, brilliant midfield). Morale of the team in his latter years was clearly demoralised and you could tell he kind of "lost the dressing room" which is never a great sign for me with a manager.

Taking over an Inter Milan team that had just won the Champions League and Serie A, you'd though he'd have it easy(ish) with a team high on confidence (perhaps slightly dented by the loss of Mourinho - but even so they still had a great team), yet they seemed to go downhill after his appointment, we embarrassed them at the Lane (which in all honest, I don't think anyone would have expected) and he was gone within something like 6 months.

I wouldn't be p*ssed if he took over but I'd rather we keep it British (should 'Arry go that is) - Moyes/ Rodgers or maybe even O'Neil or for a foreign manager, I wouldn't mind Rijkaard.

Selling Alonso wasn't what massively damaged Liverpool, so much as their failure to replace him adequately, SOS.
They still haven't done so now.

Aquilani's a good player, but in a more advanced role, where they've got a lot of competition for places anyway and Charlie Adam's just not good enough.
Decent back-up, I guess, but a starter? Not for me.

According to the Telegraph Capello is interested in the job and the interest in Moyes has faded. It also states that Benitez wants to be considered. Now it's very rare that an ex England manager is very successful when he goes back to club level and Moyes' Everton seem to take a long time every season to get going so I'd rule him out. Chelsea are finished so Capello would be wasting his time there especially if they don't secure CL which is very possible. Which leaves Capello as a strong candidate and DL likes Jose. But that still leaves Benitez in the frame.

How many people would soil themselves laughing if Capello joined the Hammersmith Cuckoos, and the first act of his tenure would be to transfer list John Terry?

Good point there croydon. I just don't know what's going to happen at Chelsea. Jose left under a cloud and it would only take one wrong word from RA and he'd be off again. I cannot see Capello or Benitez making a success of it there because it looks like Chelsea have completely shot their last bolt. But because we've been more stable with coaches over the last 3 years then I can see either making a success with us. Capello would need time but at 65 how long would he stay? Benitez is 51 I think and like it or not he might be considered by DL.
