This, I've no doubt the reason he's not working is because of media backlash our club received and what club wants that? I also think it made him easier to sack too. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
No I don't. I don't think it helps but it's not the main reason. For instance Buffon used to wear a shirt with the quote "death to cowards" on it which is a reference to Mussolini's regime, and he wanted 88 as his squad number which means heil Hitler. But because he's a good keeper it didn't matter. Honestly it's naive to think that Di Canio's alleged beliefs have anything significant to do with him not working. It's simply because, as charismatic as he is, he's not a good manager or even an ok one.
I’m not sure personally. You can say not a good manager but he did a superb job with Swindon and a very good one with us initially. The club had declined continually ever since with only Sam having any success in stopping that, so for me nobody can say if he’s got it in him. The BBC kept digging up all the fascism things, but let’s not forget large parts of Italy don’t see it as offensive, Lazio as a whole club is seen to embrace it, Buffon as has been mentioned. Maybe he just hasn’t fancied getting back into it, he’s a very wealthy man and likely can’t be arsed. He would struggle to get a job in England again due to the issues but could have surely walked a job elsewhere. For me, he showed a lot more than Poyet, the crazy escape under him was ‘in spite of’ rather than ‘because of’ Poyet, he chucked the towel in after the Spurs game. One thing for certain, he’s probably far to big a character for 90% of the fannies playing the game now, who will turn on a manager in a blink.
He certainly had something about him as a manager and I loved his time with us, but everything considered I don't think he's a good manager and it ties in to what you say about players not putting up with managers they don't like. He's too raw for the modern game and doesn't know how to handle players, a rigid my way or the high way approach only takes you so far. I don't buy that he's decided to sit on his laurels and not bother working again, I've read several times over the years about him applying for jobs in England and not getting them and he hardly seems the type anyway. Personally I don't think the fascist stuff is putting clubs off, if he was good enough he'd be working and it'd all have been swept under the carpet, it was a fuss about nothing in the first place. It's all about success in football and if a manager or player provides it virtually anything can be ignored.
The fact is our players played to get rid of managers even fergie or pep would of been **** with that crew under them
Buffon has never played or seen his future in England. There's no comparison given PDC has stated he'll only manage in England and that's where the media blowout came from. Given Mussolini's values are still huge part of life in Italy it was never going draw a fart from the media. It's just not a fair comparison imo. Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
Its not just players that have too much power in football, some very rich and powerful lobby groups out there.
Di Canio gets all these plaudits from our fans. Yet he hasn’t had a management job since us. I think he was a good short term fix but no good as a long term manager
He did what he was brought in for and it was pure theatre, beating them, the knee slide etc. One of the highlights of the last 10 years supporting our club. Not many managers are good in the long term , Bruce, O'Neil, Pardew, Holloway, the list is endless. I'll always appreciate what he achieved before the players turned on him.
With you 100%. I liked him, didn’t disagree with him going as he’d ‘lost the players’. Therein lies the issue though. Chelsea ‘lose the players every 15 month or so, they lose top players. We ‘lost’ bang average players at best. Do Canio leaving had no reflection on his ability, nor the fact he hasn’t managed since. If he never manages again he will end with a pretty ****ing decent record, we simply can’t speculate on his ability based on a dressing room mutiny and a liking for fascism.
I, too, liked Di Canio and I don't give **** about his politics. However, we move on, albeit that PdC will always feature on our highlight reels
Wasn't he hamstrung by De Fantis interference in his first full season/transfer window, and with the Bardsley O'Shea, Cattermole input he was hung out to dry . We will never know how it would have panned out but only a tit would criticise him after he kept us up. He did a great job to stay in the Premier, we were doomed.
Oh aye ****ing hell, we haven’t even touched on that. Having a 3 stone wet through Greek teenager and a load of immobile geriatrics hoyed at him. We simply don’t know, as you said he did an incredible job the season prior, then after 6 games he’s worthless? Not sure personally. Not blind defending him, he had more flaws than a penguin as a bowler hat, but he was a positive ****er, a character, and a proper man. It could have went either way.
Too right, but ha'way, only a cock couldn't appreciate what he did to keep us up, even at the end at West Brom he had the balls to go over to the crowd when he knew those tossers weren't putting it in, always kept his dignity. Maybe not a Fergy, but I bet Ellis wishes he'd listened to him now.
