I am certainly one of those who would prefer Bruce was replaced but I can hardly accept being part of a "posse". Posses were formed to go after and apprehend a criminal.
Bruce is not a criminal - I am grateful for what he has done for us - and nobody on this forum can do anything about it so "posse" seems to be an inappropriate word. Rant over.
To answer your post, I consider Sunderland, with the players we have, should be about 8th, 9th or 10th in the league so if I want to get in a manager to take us onwards and upwards, I feel it should, if possible, be someone who has experience of 7th place and above. Has any manager outside the top 7 any experience of it as a manager? I don't think so (except Avram Grant at Chelsea?). Based on this, I wouldn't go for any manager of a team below 7th.
You say we have no chance of a manager in the top 7. Moyes would be my best hope I think but as you say, probably very little chance. This is why I have to contravene your criterion of a current manager and go for MON who has experience of the top 6 on a regular basis.

I quite like McLeish. He would be the more obvious choice given the strict parameters of the question. I still like Mick M and wouldn't complain if he came back at some point. There may be a feeling of unfinished business at SAFC for him although the low point seasons are on record regardless of circumstances, so I don't think it's likely. Quinn could have brought Mick in as I think he was out of a job when Keane took over IIRC.

The guy I like as a manager got a raw deal in his last job is Di Matteo. He looks as if he may take over at Sheffield Utd. Watch them come straight back up and be a force for promotion again next season. Could be the right club at the right time for someone like him. Good judge of a player and has his team playing football. Hodgson has been getting a lot of credit for their so called resurgence but it's with RDM's men. They weren't in the bottom three when he was sacked either; a fact which a lot of people forget. I think Hodgson is a stuffy old ****er, who is up his own arse. He was a disaster when he was at Blackburn and had a canny season at Fulham. I think he's a tosser and not the canny avuncular figure that some people see.

100% agree, i've seen enough of what Di Matteo did at WBA to know he's the business. Why did they even sack him? They were only around 15th and 5 games without a win is hardly terrible.
