brb - thanks for the numbers. I had decided to give grumpygit a 'break' -- after I had produced similar statistics with a couple of other signings Gills have made for the new season. My numbers on those occasions were just as 'negative' as the ones you have given for Mandron and Marshall.
Given that British politics is very topical this week, it reminds me of the well known saying about statistics and damned lies. Anyone can have their own interpretation on your figures ( and my previous ones ). I would usually say that the proof is in the numbers. McCammon was a poor striker - 5 goals in 3 years does not lie !................. however ---
When we took Tom Eaves, his goal scoring record was equally as unimpressive - and look what happened --- his total could / should have been a lot more - if only we had better players around him ( which I think that we have now got ) - and if he didn't spend so much time chasing the ball along the 'wings!'
My memories of Marshall are that he was a bloody nuisance every time Gills played against his teams. I don't expect him to 'fly' down the wings - but his quality and experience should be better than we've had for a while - and in conjunction with the abilities of the other 'attack-minded players in the squad, we could see a lot more opportunities for Mandron, or whoever is in the middle of the opposition box [[that's the theory ! ]].
I am under no illusion as to the standard of players we have recruited. They are in League 1 for a reason [ that is their level ! ]. Steve Evans has a very good record of success in League 1. Maybe he has the ability to extract the best out of 'ordinary' players. I hope he can achieve this at Gillingham -- because -- my honest opinion of our squad is that they appear ( on paper ), to be of a standard that should promise a great improvement on what we've had to suffer for the last 3 seasons. Maybe the bark that Evans employs, might produce the sort of results that we had with another mad dog.
