This is my take on it. Hicks and Gillett made Mereiles a ''promise'' that he would get a performance related pay-rise at the end of his first year. However they didn't know at the end of that year they would no longer be owners of LFC. How could they? This was never put in writing, even if it was put in writing it was with Hicks and Gillett and not Fenway Sports Group. Fenway Sports Group the current owners of LFC agreed to nothing. Therefore that agreement is null and void, as Hicks and Gillett the promisers cannot activate it as they have no controlling interest in LFC. Mereiles is saying that Liverpool ''broke promises'', How can the Liverpool owners break promises they never made, as it was the previous owners that made such promises?
I got the feeling he wasn't going to get many games once Stevie G came back anyway so I don't get why he didn't just say..."I went for more money and because I wasn't going to play as much as I wanted at Liverpool" I think fans from both sides would just accept that and say fair play to the lad...but no they have to start all the bull**** Just as an example...Suarez reaction to Ajax and the fans when he left there was top class. Different circumstances I know but it shows it is within the capabilities of these players to focus on any positives from their previous club. Ultimately it's those very same clubs and fans who are making these guys very wealthy men. I hate all this "playing the martyr" from players (and that goes for the mercenaries we've had as well). Don't come crying about being treated badly when someone's been paying you 50 ****ing grand a week because most of us just don't want to hear it. For gods sake I'd go on permanent gimp duties bandit for 50 grand a week nevermind for playing footy.
I know what Suarez did, I saw the video. Even Torres did the right thing by Athletico Madrid fans when he left them for us. Its a pity he didn't show us the same courtesy. However he did say that he would never play for Manchester United as it would be like him playing for Real Madrid, he would never contemplate doing so. He admitted in an interview with LFCTV that he hates Real Madrid.
It makes no odds who the owners were/are. If there was something written into his contract about a pay increase then he is entitled to it whether it's the same owners or not. The fact that it was only a verbal agreement is the sticking point. A verbal agreement means nothing in the real world. They could quite easily turn around and say the conversation never happened and he'd have no proof. To be honest I think if he is only interested in staying with us if he can earn more money then I'm glad he isn't here anymore.
