Used to love liquorice - many years ago. Does anyone remember the flavoured sticks we used to buy to chew on? Absolutely no idea what they were called but I'm sure they were sticks of wood.
I go back such a long way that I can remember it would cost £1 for 3 items on average in the shopping trolley (excluding the booze). So 30 items cost about £10. Actually........ it wasn't that long ago........ Only about 10 years ago.
My first house 3 bedroom terrace £6,500 £60 month mortgage. Good job the other half had a good job as my £13.20 a week apprentice money couldn't cover it. lol
My first apprentice pay packet was £6, no income tax but 9/11 national insurance (that's nine shillings and elevenpence - nothing to do with events in 2001), from which I paid my parents £1 10/- for my keep, about £1 for bus fare and lunch, leaving about £3 a week for spending money.
Aniseed balls anyone?...The favourite trick was to stuff your mouth with them and get a good load of red spit ready and then go to your mum and spit all the "blood" out of your mouth and say you'd been in a fight!
Shopping trollies are a new fangled introduction to these shores. You sir are clearly a whippersnapper posing as an old fart!
Lord Toffingham ice-lollies and Aztec and Amazin Raisin bars ....we've lost some gems....and prices are mental compared to the past....however I think shopping costs have shot up in the last twelve months let alone the last 30 years. Great thread though one and all - memory lane.
You're not wrong Eastney - had to pop in the supermarket yesterday to buy a packet of butter - sudden price rises of between 8% and 12%. Fair gets on my wick!
