77 goals in 92 caps is not bad going!

My Uncle reckons Eusebio is the best player he's ever seen.

Ok, for a serious contribution let me ask you this. Is George Best less of a player because his national side didn't even reach the world cup finals?

No ofcourse not but there is a bit of a difference between Northern Ireland and the likes of Brazil and Argentina. I don't know whether George Best peformed that well for Northern Ireland or not, don't know anything about his time with the Northern Ireland national team.

Messi is nowhere near as good for Argentina as he is for Barcelona whereas the likes of Pele and Maradona managed to perform at both club and international level.

Anyone here see Eusebio play?

The Argentina '86 team were not that good. The difference is that Maradonna often won the game simply by himself. Messi, although has done it, does not do this anywhere near as often Maradonna did.

Berb - your uncle's not far wrong to be fair.

The current Argentina side are nowhere near as good as the team Pele played with for Brazil, they were a superb side withhout Pele! However I would agree at what you are implying, that Messi is not in the same league as Maradona or Pele!!
He is currently the best lplayer in the world, however for me, does not have the same level of genius as others in bygone era's. For me even Brazilian Ronaldo in his peak was better than messi, not to mention the likes of Zidane, cryuff, zico etc

****ing hell. Some of the **** Berb has received in this thead is nothing short of pathetic.

He posted a football related thread and some posters just want to cause **** with him then blame him for the argument.

I'l give him one thing, apart from all the **** with Kam, at least he starts some decent threads and tries to get the board more lively.

pele played all of his career in the brazilian and yank leagues. fantastic record at int level, but the standard of opposition level at domestic level was ****e.

he's the self proclaimed greatest ever player. he's done a remarkable job of fooling most of the world into thinking he was the greatest ever. speak to anyone who has followed football in brazil, and they'll more than likely tell you that he wasn't even the best brazilian player ever, let alone the very best. garrincha will be the one topping most lists.

"“Messi better than Pele? To get there he needs to score more than 1283 goals,” Pele was quoted as saying."

that quotes typifies everything about pele and his self obsessed nature.

If messi was at united, away from his perfect team, playing in the premiership, he would not do as well as ronaldo did. However ronaldo in the barca team, I can see ronny doing as well as lionel
