Started as a pit village so has mainly fallen onto hard times like the others. Grandparents lived there and I can remember it declining in the '50s. Bobby Robson's birthplace but even he moved as a kid.

You're not wrong. Match special buses direct to Roker would start out from Sacriston, Consett etc and then call in at Chester IF they had any empty seats but more often than not you never saw them. Double deckers were laid on for big games. It was on the buses that the match talk used to start, none of these made up stories that are trotted out every day to fill air time. The match result decided what the chat was like on the return home. Being on those and listening to the old fellahs is what shaped us young uns in those days.

Excellent stuff. Came from far and wide never thought about it at the time. It was on my doorstep. So yeah. Now i understand. I had it. But it was just there. Just another playground.

    I get you now.

Come to think about it, we were glad of those buses because the service to Sunderland Park Lane when via Washington or Fatfield and took an age. Then the trek to Roker would have been a killer. The nearest I have been to buses to games was with the son or grandson going to Old Trafford from N Yorks. Good craic about football, just the wrong team.!

I haven't saw evidence of this...Maybe some having a friendly dig about his obsession with correct grammar, but not disgust...

All good here mate from a far. Pleased we did our usual Houdini act again and look forward to the 13th August. Sense something might be different this time....don't no why but with Defoe and PVA signing loner term contracts is this the start of something? Sunderland...our club finally getting it's **** together....lol...couldn't be, could it? I really think Big Sam is up for this. He's a pro at this level....yes, people will have their reservations about him longer term but hey...let's cross that bridge when we get there. What came across loud and clear towards the end of the season is that we have a team....as in all the lads stick together going into battle. I noticed some of the expressions on their faces....like when we scored....to see total elation on some like M'Villa's face really got to me.He clearly loves the place....Defoe a Southern lad wanting to stay.....it's as though the place is finally wakening up and being recognized for what it is.....one of the best places in the world to play football....great facilities and passionate fan base.
Clearly the next few weeks are crucial. The transfer market is key but we have Big Sam. A shrewd as an operator we are likely to see in the Premier League. Also, getting in a solid pre season is crucial to getting the start we need......sorry for having a ramble but just great to have you back with your in depth posts....thoroughly enjoy them....hope all is well with you and your family...best wishes...LA
