Liverpool had to start the CL in an early qualifying round and we effectively had five clubs in that year (though Everton didn't make it to the tournament proper). The current situation came in to address the issue, so we keep our 4 allocated slots but they go to the top 3 and the holders if they don't finish top 4. I don't mind to be honest, CL winner is far more deserving a place than a team who finished fourth. If they moan, they should've finished higher, end of.

Colly NUFC - fair point. I've always argued that Champions League should be exactly that - 'the champions' of each league, not 2nd, 3rd + even 4th placed teams. But perhaps I'm a bit old school.
