Liverpool are plotting a second major transfer swoop on Newcastle United - for super Spanish left back Jose Enrique.

Kop talent-spotter Damien Comolli watched the highly-rated defender in action at the weekend as he looks for a solution to Kenny Dalglish’s problem position.

Enrique was in outstanding form against Blackburn Rovers, adding to his reputation as one of the best players in his role in the Premier League - and the Anfield club may trouble the Toon again in the summer.

Dalglish shattered Liverpool’s signing record by landing striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle and the Geordies would look for a hefty fee for Enrique too.

However Liverpool need a recognised player in that position as Paul Konchesky is exiled at Nottingham Forest on loan and Glen Johnson is filling in for the rest of the campaign - but clearly not suited as a long-term answer.

Enrique, 25, was a big-money capture by Sam Allardyce during his time at Newcastle and has also been linked with Manchester United as a possible replacement for Patrice Evra if he leaves.

However Liverpool are now heading the queue and could make an offer in the summer - with cash to spend on improvements in that area.

Would you let him go?

I certainly wouldn't(only if he wanted too of), it would be hard to find a replacement esp someone as solid as him!

I expect him to move on, but if he goes to ****ing Liverpool, I will be close to death!

I can't stand the scouse ****ing arseholes, and for one player to already join them, for our best player to join them would just be ****ing horrible!

Go to Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, anyone but ****ing Liverpool!

I've heard from good sources that Liverpool just spent a large pile of money on a player who is doubtful to make another appearence this season. Not sure if they'd want to go back to the club that ripped them off again

if he does get sold i hope he goes to man u or arsenal......as if he went to man city 4 other left backs would come in at the same time and he would hardly play the same at chelsea....

atleast at man u and arsenal he will get games as their left backs are ****.

I seem to remember someone saying that Enrique would only ever want to move to Barcelona (as that was his boyhood club). I'm not sure if these are his words, but let's hope so. <ok>

If he wants to go there's very little we can do about it, I just hope we can get him onto a 5 year contract before the end of the season, so at least that way IF he goes, it'll be for big money, same with Tiote!

As Leazes says, It'd be too painful if he went to Liverpool, can't stand them!!!

It feels like our players performing well is a punishment these days, lazy journo bullshit and megaspending owners could become a real recipe for disaster for Newcastle.

Quick everyone write fan mail to enrique

explain to him why we couldn't give a toss about carroll anymore and why he'll never be more loved than he is right.here.

It's a problem we have and will continue to have until our wages policy changes. I like it in a business sense but in a "holding onto your best players sense" it's pathetic.

Sir John Hall and Freddie Sheppard were reportedly running the club into the ground financially but they knew the only way to keep or get quality players was to blow the competition out the water with transfer fees and pay the players similar money to what the big boys offer. It's been the case for years, Sunderland are doing it now! It's the only way we've had relative success through the 90's and early 00's.

Found the José Enrique Barça quotes

"All the time I read in the papers that I will go here or there, but I'm happy here. I want to get this club back into the Premier League because I think we can get back there.

I listen to talk about a lot of players coming and going but I want to stay. Everything here is great, except we now play in the Championship! I was happy at Villarreal but I preferred to sign for Newcastle. They offered me a better contract and there were many famous names here, Michael Owen, Oba Martins and others.

I thought I would be playing Champions League football here, now I play in the Championship. It's strange! But I like to think I can still play in the Champions League one day with Newcastle. Yes, I'm like any other player: if Barcelona came for me, of course I would want to go.

In reality though, I want to play for Newcastle, and I know that if I want to play in the Champions League, we'll have to get back to the Premier League. Of course, we have to get out of the Championship first, and the teams in this division play a different type of football.

The Premier League is a harder challenge, but this is a different challenge. There are more quick balls played straight up to the strikers. It's similar to the Premier League in some ways, but with worse players. We have a similar team here to last year, and our players are better than other players in the Championship, so I think we can get promoted."

I ****ing hate Liverpool, their supporters are the smuggest, smarmiest prick you'll ever meet, especially since buying carroll.

I'm starting to really despise Liverpool now.

Anyway, Enrique clearly does like the toon and he seems very settled here. He even stuck by us through the Championship season which says a lot. I just hope we sign him to a long-term contract which pays him a respectful amount for the effort and skill he puts into each match.

I'm really starting to look forward to the new rules on transfers, it seems fat mike is doing the right thing financially. When do they come into effect?
