I have two children on the spectrum. (Both very intelligent, high achieving, etc) . Being on the spectrum does not make you belligerent or humourless. Actually, I've met a bunch of kids since diagnosis that are on the spectrum and most are some of the nicest kids you could imagine.

I think people's expectations and understanding of the autism spectrum is highly off the mark. If you're a twat on the spectrum... It's not because of autism. Autism will make it harder to disguise your true personality but it doesn't shape your personality.

 

Tbf they can be either. I've worked with enough to have seen the well behaved and pleasant, to those who have difficulty expressing themselves and do so through verbal abuse and/or violence.

 

I'm going to guess that there's quite a few on the spectrum posting here, most won't know it. I also have a similar piece of paper given to me by doctors in cheap suits and comfortable shoes, I wave it at the govt now and again and they give me money.

some of that learned behaviour, though the 'mercury Rising' variety do exist, I think they're almost as rare as 'Rain Man', neither of which are Matth.

 

I think being on the spectrum brings out your true self more (like being drunk can). Having difficulty reading others' emotions makes people a lot less Machiavellian. If you're a good kid with autism you come across as extra genuine; if you've got a nasty side to you it comes across unfiltered and nasty.

 

ADHD diagnosis is a good one for that.

 

It's very common so I'm sure you're right.

 

There are some really lovely children I've known with autism who've never been anything but good. And then others who I've thought you fcking little **** while restraining them for smacking someone for no apparent reason. But then I've seen the same kid and known them well enough to know they can be the most attentive and pleasant. It depends sometimes on their triggers. Anxiety, noise, disruption to routine, being unable to verbalise what they feel. I also believe they read other people better and can sense if someone doesn't like them.

 

Yeah that's true. Probably about 50% - 60% I work with have quite severe issues due to being on the high (or low) end of the spectrum.

I find probably about 70% of those end up engrossed in their own thing, computers, art - whatever they may be interested in, and are generally very polite and respectful. Any instructions have to be black and white and banter is almost impossible.

The other 30% are rude as ****, not on purpose though, they just struggle to get their feelings across. NONE of them make remarks like Matth does though, I never here racism etc. and we house UASC's too so it would definitely exaggerate things if they were like that.

UASC's are Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (just for people that don't know). Usually kids that were in the Jungle in Calais, but some picked up in dinghy's etc.

The only one I've come across that came out with anything racist I am convinced were words picked up from parents. But that was the exception not the norm.

I have no idea about Matth not knowing him, but I can see some of the emotional stuntedness in him. Or maybe he's just repressed, fck knows. Btw has matth been racist? I've not seen it.

 

My nephew can fall into both categories.

 

I'm not sure about him being racist tbf (I didn't actually mean it to come across like it read!). I've heard every other ism though.... I don't get offended by Matth as most don't. I think the main point people make is he could end up in trouble if he doesn't watch out.
