By the time it makes land fall it should be known as Ex Hurricane Ophelia, however we are on a country wide Red Alert with sustained winds forecast of 70/80 Kmh/h with gusts off 150kmh/h. Apparently this is the largest Hurricane ever recorded this far East of the USA and we are into un-chartered territory as this is far stronger than most storms that we normally encounter.

All schools are shut across the country and employers are encouraged not to open, we're basically in a lock down situation for the next 12 hours or so.

At the moment Ophelia is still some 150 miles out to sea but the winds are building and we're expecting significant sea surge of >10 meters, it's a good job that although we're only 200 meters from the sea we're about 200 feet above sea level so we won't bee affected by that but the trees are still heavy in leaf so some damage could be done.....

Here's a link to Ophelia's twitter feed, at least we can have a laugh about it.....

    Stay safe all.....

Hope you get through it Trams, it's eerily dark here in Sligo now.
I had been meaning to take down an old satellite dish bolted to a high chimney, the dish itself has slipped down the pole it was attached to and is hanging downwards, and swivelling around like a top, hope to hell it holds, nothing I can do about it now...

It's been quite a nice morning so far sun shining, but clouds beginning to build and wind picking up. I've been keeping an eye on our local live weathercam site and the temperature has dropped by a degree in the last hour and mean wind speed is around 50km/h with gusts of 60 km/h.....

By contrast, it's a lovely day up here on the north Norfolk coast, sun shining, temp. in the low twenties and just a bit of a breeze.

Yep. Flood warnings for Christchurch and Poole harbours this morning, dark-ish clouds overhead now and the light has just gone very yellow. I wouldn't wash the car, folks...

The sea is now basically white froth, I'd take a photo and post it but the windows are so full of sea spray that it's difficult to see out!!!!!

The storm surge could be a problem as high tide is just after 4 pm so the low lying areas around the promanade could be flooded as there's a 4 meter difference between low and high tide.......

In semi rural Warwickshire, very warm, breezy but the sun is really weird - huge and orange, like at sunset. The light is very odd.

Good luck and if possible enjoy the force of nature all those in its path.

This is the twitter feed of RTE's South East Correspondent with some clips from Dunmore East which is around 10 kms from us and where they filmed that Eastenders spin off with Shane Ritchie that was broadcast earlier this year....
