Iâve written a mini eBook about football. 'Humbled for a Season: In defence of football' is now published on Amazon for Kindle users and on iTunes for iPad, iPhone, etc users, for a bargain price of £1.50 or thereabouts.
The book was prompted by the seemingly endless controversies this season â Tevez refusing to play, racism allegations, death threats, refused handshakes, diving, excessive spending â and the accompanying claims that football was in crisis and losing its soul. I wanted to put the opposite argument, that football is still in rude health and that there are still plenty of valid reasons for loving football. I look at issues gathered around three major factors â players, fans and money â and then conclude with a chapter that asks what it is about football that makes us care so much about it in the first place. Naturally, Spurs are featured when I tackle the Muamba incident.
Due declaration: the final chapter includes some thoughts on the spiritual implications of the game. That isnât the main focus of the book by a long stretch and it shouldn't spoil the enjoyment for anyone who takes a different view to me on such matters. I only mention it because I wouldn't want anyone to feel they were tricked into reading that stuff under false pretences.
