By playing two wide wing backs you put their midfield on their heels, thereby take the ground, we do not have the quality to play four at the back and no pace in midfield without the wing back formation, it is fairly simple tbh, and quite basic. As for this being a poor second choice midfield, our alleged first choice isnt any better, hence why we need to employ 5 across the middle.
