I believe Don Robby was effectively the Chief Exec/Chairman of the Football Club - the ground was owned by the Needlers - Mrs Needler would never sell the ground to anyone because I think it was big H's wish that BP was always to be used for sporting purposes and could never be sold as real estate.

"Slightly O/T but I think Phil Buckingham is a load of old ****e.

His match reports and articles are crap, they are so predictable and cliché , all he does is state the obvious. I'd like to see somebody else given a chance, even if it's just for one article.

    And he's a Leeds fan."

    That's his boss......

He himself is a Sunderland fan.

Why is it so hard to get someone local though?

I think Buckingham does a reasonable job of pretending to be a City fan, as do Burnsy and Matt Dean on humberside. But I don't see why literally everyone employed in the local media is from somewhere totally different.

I'm sure he outed himself as a Mackem in his one of his first articles.

"If Margaret's Thatcher's government were unpopular, were we living in a dictatorship ? Or was it that the Tories were less unpopular than Labour or the Liberals?"
I think the Labour Party were doing fairly well at the time but everything changed as a result of the Falklands War - everyone seemed to forget that the invasion of South Georgia was encouraged by the Conservative Government's plan to save money by withdrawing the Royal Navy's local protection vessel and just saw the resulting war as a personal triumph for Margaret Thatcher.
I think City's programmes at the time used to have photographs of the board on the front and I'm sure I've got one from the home match against Halifax who were in similar dire financial straits. The board's photos were blanked off and simply captioned as "Official Receiver" who was also listed as the Halifax chairman.

I think you are right with this - I seem to remember that every player that played in that game was on the transfer list - not something that had probably happened before or since!
