Off Topic Hull City Centre Public Realm Strategy

City entered the Premier League after the city had experienced two decades of intentional underfunding and managed decline by successive central governments. On top of this, the world entered one of the biggest economic crisis and cuts were enforced across all local governments.

To think that one local councillor could have averted all this and changed the course of history is ridiculous. Local councillors can be blamed for poorly calibrated traffic lights, officious parking enforcement and errant street furniture, not changing the economic direction of the planet.

 

He could have promoted City as at the time we were the only PL club in Yorkshire. Imagine what other cities would have made of that. Instead he said Hull was a great sporting city, not only did we love our rugby league but wrestling and darts as well. What culture. He has also said more than once PL football never brought a penny into Hull. Apart from that being inaccurate being in the PL brings more publicity to a city than anything else.

 

I don't know the figures. Does PL football benefit non-fashionable cities that much? Have Burnley, Blackpool, Stoke and Swindon benefited? Not sure that many overnight in local hotels for games, most supporters are in, a few drinks, the game and out. Few supporters visit local parks and museums whilst there, which was Geraghty's remit, from memory, so correct me if wrong.

Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool have had billions of investment over the last three decades, Hull can't compete, plus location and transport links hinder. Sometimes just have to accept that it's out local hands.

 

I would say Blackpool definitely. Many go to the game and have the weekend over. Others not so. I would say Hull did as the hotel trade did ok, Hull trains did ok as did food and drink places. Geraghty was wrong and a bloody dinosaur.

 

Despite what some naysayers like to claim, those expert in the field say that Hull's problem isn't getting people to stay or come back as the figures are very good for return visits, it's getting them here for that first visit, so the coverage of being in the top flight, as well as CoC will have had a significant impact.

I don't know if is still holds, but Hull is/was either top, or in the high rankings of Universities where people remain in the area after studying or working there. It can't be then that bad can it?

 

That statistic was one I always quoted when on holiday and I mentioned I was from near Hull and they gave one of those disparaging looks.

I remember in some effort to get fans to come and stay that two coaches of Sunderland had booked in a hotel and for lunch before going to the game. Humberside’s finest stopped them and insisted they go to the MKM despite the protestations of the drivers. Only after the police checking after the game were they not escorted out with the other coaches and allowed to go to the hotel. Welcome to Hull!

Plod rounded up some Feyenoord fans who made a trip to see City and made them go straight to the docks after the game. Same with the few hundred Royal Antwerp fans in a preseason friendly. Kept in after the game and bussed straight to the dock. I think the sight of their lads marching to the stadium en masse put the wind up Humberside’s Finest.

 

I was once recieving pleasure next to one of the ponds after a night in Biaritz when a guy came from nowhere and fell straight in. I had to think for a second if I should help him or not. Ruined my night and his clothes.

 

Come to Hull and get drunk cheaply on the Culture...

I’m currently in Turkey. Managed to get a very nice chilled Efes on Marmaris beach last week for 69Tl (£1.68) but due to inflation, by yesterday it cost me 88Tl (£2.15).
I also came across a local who doesn’t like Acun, he didn’t say why. Everyone else I’ve spoken to here thinks he’s some sort of god.

 

And they are still at it. Whilst staying in a hotel in Whitby recently I picked up the 'Visit Yorkshire' glossy magazine. Basically an advert for the region where councils pay for a two page spread to promote their area/town/city. Hull is in there, two page spread, colour photographs of the marina and Humber Street and a decent, if not a bit amatueurish write up...then right at the end it comes....'Hull is famous for its two rugby league teams, Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC...' then the usual tosh about you are either one or the other. Yawn.

 

It’s painful to keep hearing this. Hull is not famous for this outside the M62 corridor. It’s a bloody Myth.

 

That is so depressing. My last trip back was in 2013 for the Proschwitz penalty miss against Cardiff (and the gratefully received assist from Leeds against Watford ). Not that I spent much time wandering through the city centre, but hell, it was nothing like depicted in this vdeo.
After that weekend I nipped over to Nice for a few days. The contrast was telling re the visible conditions of the two port cities at that time. Must be even worse now. Sad times indeed. Hope the Feds and local councils get their acts together soon.

 

I think that's a bit unfair, PB - if you're over 40 and grew up in the UK, Hull is famous for the fishing industry, John prescott and rugby league. It's not so relevant today, but memories don't change quickly.

I am well over 40 Heimdallr. I think for Hull City Council to keep referring to the word “ Famous” is outdated. We had a great fishing industry fantastically portrayed by George Norris,s photographs but now a memory. I used to watch RL late 70,s early 80,s alongside City and enjoyed it. It’s of course well know in some quarters but should not be a leader for promoting Hull as a city.

 

That's a shame, he lied.
