When we moved into a terraced house on Greek Street in the late 70s it didn't have a bath or an indoor toilet. My Dad who was a trainee plumber for the council at the time converted one of the 2 back bed rooms into a bathroom when we moved in. Amazing to think about that really.
I worked for the council at that time, and very likely met your dad. Greek Street had the best chippie in Hull bar none, it was just the downstairs of a two up two down house converted to a fish and chip shop. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Until I was eight we lived in an old railway cottage in a street off Holderness Road - toilet down the yard, no running water inside, electric lights only in front-room, middle room and kitchen, no electricity upstairs just a pair of gas lights (disconnected!) in each of the two bedrooms; remember being driven out by a plague of cockroaches that had to be cleared by a man with a 'bomb' - the good old days
We were lucky, Smith&Nephew built a dozen or so 3-bed houses around Boulevard, Newton St and Redbourne St just after the war for their employees. My dad was lucky enough to get one in Redbourne St . After a few years we moved upmarket, into one of the 2 Boulevard houses!
Small world. I was really young then but I think he worked out of a depot on Hawthorn Ave. I do remember the chippy though which as a few door up from us. As well as the chip shop, I think, there were 3 little shops down there which were just the ground floor of a house. Wouldn't survive now.
The only place where you can buy a fishing rod, an extension cable, a wardrobe, 3 pairs of underpants and a bag of wine gums for a tenner. Love it.
Dunston's Shipyard on the Haven in Hessle is a name I recall from the late 50's early '60s. A bunch of us used to cycle past it at weekends to dig for wild mushrooms in a place called "The tape tip dump" which we used to sell to a geezer who sold 'em on to the public with vegetables on his horse & cart around the Hessle streets. Memories of stuff we got up to just to make a few bob. https://sites.google.com/site/hesslelocalhistorysociety/hessle-s-history/hessle-in-1823
I lived in Hessle we knew it as tape dump it was where the old gasometer was . We used to scavenge for bike frames and parts to make one up , managed1 eventually . Mates went lamping there or ratting , not sure which is right word for it .
