Online retail giant Amazon could be set to open a huge new distribution centre near Hull, potentially creating hundreds of jobs. Plans have been submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council to build a modular warehouse and office accommodation on a site at the Melton West business park off the A63. The application has been submitted by Hull-based Wykeland Group, the business park's owners. Although the application does not identify a potential end user, there is speculation that Amazon is being lined up to move in subject to the plans being approved by the council. The size, lay-out and intended operation at the facility all fit with the online retailer's business model. The proposed lay-out of the 15.8-acre site includes a main warehouse with a total gross floorspace of 8,193 square metres - slightly larger than the pitch at the KCOM Stadium.
Seems a bit strange, Amazon already has distribution centres in Donny I believe. I'd have thought they could service E Yorks easily enough.
I went on a tour at the Donny one recently. Can’t remember exact details but the distribution centres only distribute certain things - the Donny one doesn’t stock games consoles and TVs for example (they’d have to order it from the distribution centre that does) so I imagine if that one is an Amazon in Melton, it’ll distribute things the Donny one currently doesn’t.
It Will probably be automated also so jobs wint be as the would a few years back . Poor robots working on zero hours contracts
Creating minimum wage jobs that need topping up with state provided benefits. Paying warehouse rates for a site out in the country side whilst killing off what few real shops are left. And all the while creaming the profit away and paying next to no tax. ****s.
Indeed, a very good friend of mine in America absolutely detests Amazon as he rightly states they’re eventually going to send most small businesses to the wall. ****s indeed!
British people have the power to stop them and even make them disappear completely, should they wish, but they choose to spend £11b a year with them instead.
Most of us would admit to at some point liking easy and lazy but, as far as Amazon is concerned, I guarantee that I’ll never be one of them.
My wife, who buys probably 150 books a year, decided to only buy online from High Street bookshops. Lo and behold a good half of her orders are fulfilled by Amazon. Can't escape the bastards.
I have to say that I’d rather pay a visit to Waterstones, unless they’re one of the 50% that use Amazon, if they were I’d choose one of the others.
These are academic books so the choice of shops is v. limited and they are rarely stocked. They are listed on their catalogues but they don't say from where they are sourced.
Was at a thing recently with head of Amazon UK speaking. Interesting bloke...I imagine he’s reasonably well off. But you’re bang on. Shoppers have got the ultimate choice about whether companies stay or go bust, and they choose to pump money into a company that moves more than I’d like it to out of the country. Of course shoppers also are the same people that can choose the government too, and you can’t blame Amazon for following tax laws...it’s the laws that are wrong.
They've now changed, the new Digital Tax has been confirmed, it will collect 2% of all UK revenue for the likes of Amazon and Facebook.
Good stuff, hadn’t seen that. Wonder how that compares to corporation tax if it had been that on their profits (not that far off if they make 10% profit)
