It's not my opinion, what gigs have been on recently? Gigs in The Ice Arena, Hull The Arena is also renowned as a concert venue, attracting some of the top names in the music world. Recent appearances include The Killers, Lostprophets, Faithless and Keane. Those 'recent appearances' were ten years ago ffs.
3500 is far too small despite what the know it alls on here think. People travel to see the top bands that a big arena would attract so it's completely irrelevant how big Hulls catchment area is.
And i'm sick of hearing about Sheffield and Leeds, shall we stop breathing because they also breathe oxygen in those 2 ****holes? **** them, we should be pushing on to compete with them not lingering in the shadows because they've already made their move. Leeds have got a proper arena so we'll have to build a glorified bingo hall instead? Pathetic mentality.
Thousands of people have attended concerts every week for decades in Leeds before they built an arena. We barely have more than couple of gigs a month of any note and you think we should jump straight to an arena.
The fact is its too expensive to convert for concerts, if a promoter has a choice between The Refectory in Leeds or The Ice Arena in Hull its a no brainer for them to go to Leeds, the cost of the venue is less than half. You only have to see how few concerts have been at the Ice Arena in the last few decades to see how unattractive it is for promoters. By building a 3,500 capacity venue we actually have a viable venue to compete with other major cities, not some overpriced shed that's not fit for purpose.
. It's not pathetic to want a venue on the same circuit as the O2 Academy type venues, they get excellent bands and we'll regularly be able to fill it.
Define decent? Excellent bands play in the <3,500 capacity venues, just look at the current schedule for the O2 Academy and Refectory. We have a much better chance competing in that market than the 10,000+ market, Leeds struggle to book the biggest artists, they regularly lose out to Manchester and Sheffield. How well do you think we'd do competing against those?
What for £40 million pound when Scunthorpe utd are building a 12,500 stadium for £25 million ??? Don't tell me that you think that our council borrowing that sort of money will end up not being a burden when Leeds got 13,000 for 10 million more. It stinks of fingers in the pie to me.
The Leeds arena actually cost £60 million. You're right though it is overpriced, but that doesn't mean we should be building something bigger, it just means we've got a bunch of idiots organising it.
You can't compare the cost of building a football stadium with the cost of a purpose built music venue, you might as well just compare with the cost of building a B&Q, which could hold 20,000 people.
