Started this last night: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull's_lost_cinemas Been wrestling with it today....not as easy as posting on this board! Anybody up for improving it - give it a go.
The Pickle Onion factory was Celia Products, I used to work in George Street and you could smell some of the girls from the factory as they walked past. Clifford Dunn's first Savemore Store was in Lowgate near the junction of Mytongate. He moved to the old Princess Hall Cinema when he started to expand.
what was the old cinema called on the endyke lane ? my dad told me he could get in to see a movie if he took a jam jar...
The Priory cinema was my local and often visited the Carlton .Saturday morning seesion at the Priory always finished with a group gathering in "Joe's Cafe" round the corner in Calvert Lane .If my memory serves me right Eddie Burbanks (the left winger from the "Carter" side ) did own the cafe at a later date. Trips to the Carlton were more common for a visit to "Muriel Riley's " dance hall underneath the picture house.
Here's another link I found:- http://www.davesden.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cinemas.html ....and another:- http://static.hullcc.gov.uk/hullinprint/archive/june2003/these_used_to.php
They danced in the aisles to the Platters music and Bill Haley throughout the film being played at the Regent in the Fifties a real amazing performance and the first time that the ushers didn't call for people to sit down quietly. People queued right back into the Station access and all along Anlaby Road just to get in .
Another bit of history, from the same archive as the 1957 film:- http://www.yfaonline.com/assetDetails.cfm?film=3835&keyword=
I have never edited an article on wiki, but giving it a go here. Anything to save something promoting our fine city!
It looks as if you've already been on Wiki and improved it. If it was you, thanks - anything to get the "Deletion" threat lifted! You can always PM me and we can discuss things off the main board.
Made the improvements and looks like others have made a couple of tweaks too. Theres alot of scope for adding more information. Looking positive for lifting the "deletion" threat! I'm no expert on the subject, but a little online research can work wonders.
Yes it was a cinema would you believe it was called the Priory, it was a Savemore supermarket run by Clifford Dunn, when he finished our supermarket chain (WB Grocers) bought out all his shops, I remember going round them all during the takeover to stocktake.
Some of my earliest memories are of the Plaza - my mum worked there for a while as an usherette and I remember watching Singing in the Rain, also being terrified by the newsreel film of the Lewisham rail disaster. Mostly though it was the Saturday morning films which included Superman, Batman and Flash Gordon (my favourite!). Kids all came running out with macs tied round their necks like superhero capes.
While visiting Hull recently I was shocked and dismayed to find that the Eurika cinema has been demolished, I thought I read somewhere that the front of the building was to be preserved. I used to go there once a week as a lad, it was known as the bug house, you sat there and didnt know if it was a cat or a rat running past your legs in the dark
They're the ones I remember Sutton, what I did forget about was the Lions. Aren't they still in the City somewhere?
