32 games into the season and Hughes and Hassenhuttl have both 16 games in charge. Interesting time for a comparison. Hughes W1 D6 L7 = 9 points Ralph W7 D3 L6 = 24 points We all knew Ralph has transformed us but those stats are ridiculous, especially when considering the fact we have not added a single player to the squad. *It has been correctly pointed out to me that we have in fact only played 31 games and Kelvin was in charge for the spurs game. But I think the point stands.
Our points-per-game under Ralph has now risen to 1.5, which if continued over the last 7 games means we could finish on 43 or 44. If anyone had said that at the beginning of December they would have been detained under the Mental Health Act.
We've only played 31 and Hughes was sacked after Man U at home which was only 14 games (still pretty s**t that we only won once though ).
Hughes kept us up...though Pellegrino may have achieved the same....still he did the job he was hired for. However, we would have had much more of the same if Mark had stayed....or worse. Ralph has given us some entertainment and hope for the future...and I think we ain't seen nothing yet.
And he has done it with a wooden leg, fighting through plague, loaded down with rocks in his pockets, burdened with an albatross around his neck, stricken with crippling arthritis and suffering staggering homesickness. Legend.
He seemed an excellent choice when he was appointed and it's proved that. Interesting that the amount of defeats is similar. It's just the wins and the draws stats that are completely different. Shows what good management can do.
And Ralph has claimed some other records like back to back wins, and beating a top six side(x2), first time since April 2017! Not to mention the effect he's had on the players, both young and experienced. And all that while balancing a troubled dressing room, and seemingly very little money to invest. But seeing it laid out like that is incredible. Those number speak for themselves.
Hughes had reached the end of the road because clearly the results were not good enough and we would probably be in a much more perilous position now but I will still argue that he had some value as a Saints manager because if he had taken us down last season then we wouldn't be discussing how much impact Ralph has made as our Manager now.
In hindsight we should have paid him the bonus and said thank you in the summer. But we didn't, and it cost us far more. But the way he handled the Swansea game will be his legacy for me, that was a massive winner takes all, and with all the shenanigans, he brought us away with the 3 points and our top flight status.
