How will new Premier League Spending Controls affect Southampton?

I presume Cortese voted against it because he could see that it would have a more adverse effect on clubs trying to be ambitious than on big clubs with their huge commercial income. It will be very hard for us to get anything like the global appeal of Man U, Arsenal etc. Any borrowing has to be guaranteed by the owners...may be hard in our case as Markus is no longer with us and not sure how much risk the Leihberr family will take. Man City's objection is presumably because they will struggle to balance their books (hope that's not our reason!).

 

I think you will find that their contracts are that if they are playing in the premier league their money goes up by 30% (or at least a high %) I seem to remember that they recorded wages as being over £50000 or very close to that, when they were in the Championship. Additionally you have had a few more star players join since then. I accept that some have gone but nothing major wage wise leaving.
It would probably depend on what age a player is considered not to be an academy player anymore, as their wages are not counted in with the main structure. Shaw, Reeves and Ward prowse's wages are part of the academy structure I would have thought.

 

Exactly. It preserves the status quo, preventing ambitious clubs from pumping money in for short term success. This may be no bad thing in the long term, but it preserves the financial advantage of the wealthy elite in the short term.

 

I still doubt our wage bill is as high as you say.

I would say our wage bill now is around 40 odd mill a year.

 

Makes sense we would vote against, if we are as rich as everyone says. Without a stadium the size of Old Trafford and the global commercial income of the top sides, we're not going to be able to compete with them financially. We need to have a lot of investment up front if we are to build up to that level.

The idea is that no one can just buy success by spending excessively like Chelsea and Man City have done recently. Also no one does a Pompey (aka doing a QPR) and going bust by spending what they can't afford. Laudable in itself, but means that success will take far longer and status quo is maintained. I expect Cortese feels we are losers in this because he is trying to do it the right way with sufficient investment but not madness. On the other hand, it's been brought in too late to stop QPR spending more than they can afford.
