I think the answer is that Defoe is worth far more than money at this present time...He represents where we are and what ambitions we have,..
Opposition will study strikers and pen takers for hours mate, defenders can step up and the keeper is essentially guessing. Ronaldo usually wants the 5th one I remember him saying it's not for the glory it's for the hope that they've already won it by then. It's more poker face than skill at that point in my opinion.
Surely it's still better for someone who is a good penalty taker to take one, even if the keeper might have a better idea of where they might put it, than some clunker who's just going to shut their eyes and thump it. I don't believe a word of that from Ronaldo, the only reason he takes the last one is because he knows it draws the most attention to himself.
Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce has joined the race to sign Sunderland's England striker Jermain Defoe, 34. (Sun) What's this race thing he's not for sale
I'm out... talking about Ronaldo on this board is the last thing I'm interested in doing again after last time.
The keeper might be guessing with defenders, but no way should a defender have the accuracy that a striker will have. As you say, goalkeepers do study opposition strikers, but just about every penalty still goes past them.
Shootouts are different though, becomes a lottery when the stakes are high. Even the best buckle. You'd obviously want your striker to take them but a LB or a CB might just have that Ice Cold mentality required. I'd always go with a calm player over a good finisher, like we said earlier any pro-footballer should be hitting the target every time.
Penalty taking is 90% psychological and 10% skill in my opinion. You can be a brilliant striker of a ball, but if you lose your nerve in a pressure situation, then you are more likely to fluff it..
I'm not going to be able to agree with you on this one. For me, your best finishers take your penalties. If Zlatan and Phil Jones were stepping up to take a penalty in a shootout, I know who my money would be on.
That's probably true because Zlatan is the better striker and probably has the mental edge. Who would you pick out of Sergio Ramos and Jozy Altidore, hypothetically speaking in a CL Final shootout? I'm not saying defenders are better by the way, obviously somebody like Zlatan would be first choice but it's definitely not the same for all strikers.
RAMOS by a country mile mate, even if he was blindfolded. Altidore couldn't hit a barn door from two yards out.
Aye Altidore's not the best player for that hypothetical scenario, I wouldn't trust him to score a pen with no keeper.
Every footballer should have the ability to beat a goalkeeper from the penalty spot, which is where confidence comes in.
its where all the managers who are interested in signing Defoe have to do a 100m sprint and the first over the line has first option on him. fat Sam has no chance against that cnut from West Ham.
What a lazy bunch of bastards at the sun, Jesus I could make better stories throwing a darts at a dictionary!!
