My wife, children and I have been sitting upstairs in our Somerset Levels home, totally cut off from the outside world, with the downstairs flooded for the last five weeks. Me and Mrs Smug are keeping our fingers crossed for you mate Just to follow on from Sunderlandstu's Red Cross story. We were once looking after a friend's house in the French countryside around Christmas time. The gate bell went around 9pm one night ...... it was cold & dark and there was a match on the telly. I asked, through the intercom, who it was and it was the local fire brigade 'selling their Christmas calenders' which is a French euphemism for 'collecting money with menaces'. I thought 'well, they're a brave bunch and do a good job serving the community' so I trudged 100 yards down the gravel drive in the dark with 10 euros. When I got to the gate they were sat grinning in their big red fire engine with 'En Greve' written, in white paint, all down the side .............. 'On Strike!"
